Fur & Feather Auctions - Hit or Miss

I travelled an hour to an auction this morning

Last time I went there was some good quality stock out of some 800 lots of cages
Today hens with legs like snooker tables were being hawked as pullets
Down trodden Shamos sat next to mud caked brahmas

I spotted some black jersey giant pullets that were real nice and thought I'd give em a go.
They went for £46 for the 3.. Over my pre-set limit of £35..so hopefully they will have found a good home.

Some years ago I was at our local auction for some goslings. A large crowd, mithering kids and as the hammer knocked down the auctioneer moved onto the next cage to announce 6 goslings.. What the hell had I got??
6 homing pigeons.aaaaaaaahhhhhh.

What good and bad experiences have you had??????
 
Fell in love with a gorgeous young cochin pullet....ehem...

Now called Biggins....paid £26 for him... :shock: :shock:
 
i bid on 2 hens only to find i had wrong number i got 5 russian hamsters. thought id got a bargin £4
the hamster tem multiplied so i ended up with 13. very cute but dont lay eggs
another time i went for ducks ame back with 4 ferrets (i elt sorry for them) i paid £3 and found them lovely homes

thought my goslings becoming pigeons was strange....nice move on the ferrets though :-)08 :-)08

forgot to add
the pigeons were obvioulsy good homers and flew off the next day
the next month they were back in the auction... :-)12 double bubble for one lucky (or wise) owner
 
im murder if i think that if they dnt sell harm will come il take them.
i could of found homes for 20 ferrets bu i didnt know at the time
 
I was up and about early on Saturday as ususal.....can never manage a lie in these days..must be getting old :-)07

Before the rest of the family stirred I decided to leave a note to say I was off the Selby Fur & Feather.
Had never been before so thought I would just have a nosy and see what quality of stock was on offer.

300 ish lots of quite a wide varied of poultry and furry stuff on offer...and not too many chancers trying to make a quick buck from ex.bats

It was the first time that I had seen Vorwerks in the flesh. They looked real nice; bright, clean and alert. Marked up as POL pullets I ended up bring 6 of them home :D
Far better result than my years past experience ( 6 goslings / 6 pigeons saga)

After the auctioneer had finsihed with the livestock he moved onto the fertlie eggs. 18 brown welsummers ready for getting knocked down at £1.50....well just couldnt leave those on the table....2 quid and they went home as well..

Then in a cardboard box came a black silkie broody hen with 5 white and 2 black chicks (as hatched all pure bred silkies, or so they said) ,,,,,,,,where these had come from lord only knows.....I am definitly getting soft in my old age....home they came as well..

The kids were made up when I got home :-)08 :-)08

this morning all stock settling in well and I'm looking forward to see what they all turn out like

I'm glad I don't know of any of those auctions down here as I'm sure if I went to one I would be tempted like you. :lol:
 
Dad went to Salisbury poultry auction last year for some ducs, I needed a millefleur pein pullet and asked him to bid on a cage, brought her home she was limping badly on examination she had a large infected bite under her wing, she was dead the next day!
Never bought from an auction since...
 
I have never bought at Auction. It can be a lottery and unless you have a good eye, can be risky.

That said, the attraction of course is you get some great birds for a great price and you can get some great birds...

Health is my main concern, some breeders will pass on sub-standard birds at auction so you do have to keep an eye for healthy birds as a minimum. :-)05

I prefer to decide what I want and then find the breeders that have a good reputation - I waited 2 years for my Geese and went to Germany for my ducks. The prices can be higher but I have bought other birds from sales and they have been a dissapointment.

If I buy birds, I prefer to go to a breeder who has kept them for a number of years and then you can see how they are kept and the dedication of the breeder - I always try to prepare myself to walk away if I'm not happy and have done this a few times but in the long run, if you start with good stock, you are years ahead of where you could be with poor quality birds if you want to breed.

I'm not saying auctions are not a good place to buy... but you need to be careful.

Saying this, I'm meeting David at Melton Mowbrey on 26th March and will have a look what is on offer :-)11

were goin to a chicken auction 10 of next month bit pricey normaly but only taking my nephew fr day out and i wont be coming home with any ferrets or hamsters
