Hello all,
My Barnevelder recently went broody, and she successfully hatched a nice set of chicks (4/5 hatched, so well done her).
One of the chicks - a Dark Brahma is not doing so well in its growth, and has an odd bare patch on one side. She got a bot of a cut here after a few days, although it didn't look like a peck injury - it looked more like the skin had just split open.
We sprayed it with that purple antiseptic stuff, and it seems to be scabbing over and healing well - see picture.
I'm wondering if this could be a result of something I have heard of where the chick gets a little stuck to the inside of the egg during development.
Other than being small, the chick seems very vigorous and running round with the others, so this is really me being inquisitive rather than worrying overly. Do we reckon the feathers will fill in later, or will I just end up with a slightly manky chicken?

Thanks!!

Looks like it came out before the yolk sac was absorbed fully. Chicks mend remarkably quickly Nick. You have done exactly the right thing -just repeat it until you are sure it is healing without infection. We had a Wyandotte with half the side of her head skin ripped away to the bone, from her eye to her neck had gone. Put that down to an over-enthusiastic mum showing them how to scratch. I was going to despatch her but noticed that she was moving around quite happily and left her there. Weeks later the skin had grown back, the ear lobe and ear had reformed and after 12 months the only sign was a few tufty feathers out of place. She went on to be a lovely, friendly productive hen.

Thanks Chrismahon!
Just the reassurance I was hoping for!

It's hard to tell from the photo Nick, where exactly is the bare patch?
