Hello, devastated- i got foxed this morning at 6.30am- i had let the geese and ducks out and was feeding the chickens when i heard the geese going mad in one of the fields- ran to the gate to see a big, dark brown, dog fox with my old muskovy duck in its mouth :( Chased it, it ran off but not before turning and chewing the head off my poor duck :( :( :( She was 8 years old and not very quick, couldn't fly like my others. I will be out with the gun tonight/tom morning and i hope it enjoyed it's last meal
Because- it WILL be back- prowling around at night i can cope with- everything is locked up securely- but when it comes during the day- even when i am around the farm most of the day then that's a different matter  I now have four orphan goslings in the brooder- a bit traumatised but untouched- at least i know she died trying to protect them. Here's to happy hunting!!!!
regards, David

Sorry to hear it mate, hope you get him!

I've only had jackdaws to deal with, I'm lucky there's no foxes around my village.

Got 15 this last week, only another 150 or so to go!

sorry to hear that, i saw one at 3pm yesterday 200 yards from my free range ducks. its always this time of year we have trouble seems to to start when hay making starts. i think they find it harder to catch rabbits when grass is short so come looking.

Oh damn it , another one... Sorry David.

It is definately the time of year with cubs growing, hay cut, or whatever but June to August is definately worse than the winter months...

David, so sorry and when you were so close too. Good luck with the gun tonight.

Is it me or does there seem to be more fox attacks recently both on livestock and humans :?

Sorry to hear about this :(

Is it worth keeping them in a bit longer in the mornings? 6.30am means a fox will still be around and on their way home or hoping for an opportunistic meal. Even an hour might make a difference.

Hi Snifter- they are normally out at about 6 or even earlier if it's nice weather- i get up at 4.30-5.00 every day  Hopefully it will be dead by tom :) then i can carry on as usual- it must be a new member of the locality as i have never had bother before and have the same routine. So, i assume it's new to the area- it is a very unusual colour- i have hunted all my life and never seen one as dark- it's almost like a black dog!
regards, David :)

Hi Tim, yes, but a bit thinner than most labs :) Like i said i have never seen one like it-and bold at that  I missed it this morning but it was here during the night- i saw the signs. So will be out tonight and very early morning-can't have it thinking it's a fast food restuarant  (or in the case of my poor duck- not fast enough restuarant :( )
regards, David :)

Well good luck David. I hope you catch him. I'm sure he's related to Arnold Schwarzenigger somehow...

He'll be back!

I'm so very sorry to hear of your loss david. I hope you get that fox mate !!

John

Oh no! Not another one :( Lucky you turned up when you did or the goslings (and more) would have been dead too... Blinking creatures

I come from the starting point of every animal is equal on this earth , but as a fellow poultry keeper I'd have done the same thing , let's hope that's the last time you have to take such action.

Hi, ribofilio, i dont mind them coming at night- i always lock everything up but coming during the day is not good- the trouble is once they know they can get a meal during the day- they will be back all of the time- i had to take action- much as i don't like doing it if i hadn't i would have no stock left or would have to give up the ducks and geese and keep all the poultry locked up 24/7. Hope you understand and no offence meant.
regards, David :)

Well I'm glad you got the fox David, it would have caused so much devastation if it had come back. I drive between Downham and Wisbech quite often for work, did it on Monday quite early and found myself looking around the fields for your big black fox :D No idea where exactly you are mind, but it made me laugh when I realised what I was doing.
