Fox proof run - mesh skirt?

Hi all,

I am planning on building a run using Heras security fencing as the main 'building block'. It will be 2 panels by 1 panel, so about 3.5 m x 7 m. And I will use more panels for a roof. I will also use some sort of tarpaulin/plastic covering to make water proof (+ catch rainwater for chickens to drink). It's going to be at my allotment so I want it especially secure against foxes as there will not be any people/dogs around.

So, my question is what should I add to make it fox proof?

I was thinking some wire mesh laid on the ground (and attached to main structure) in a kind of skirt to stop them digging. Does it need to be buried? I would rather not if possible as I plan to move it after 12 months, but would rather it was as secure as possible. If needed, How far below ground? And if not how far out should I come? I saw with the Omlet runs they just have something like a 10 cm skirt, is that enough? I was thinking more like 50cm?

Hi braceandy, and welcome to the forum.
I would think that, if you got the narrowest kind of weldmesh rolls, which are probably 400-500 mm, I don't know without looking it up, you would have enough width to run it up the sides far enough to make it secure, then wire it on or use plenty of cable ties perhaps. You might then bend it outwards and hold it down with concrete blocks round the edges. Cutting long rolls of weldmesh is hard work and leaves one prickly edge, so it's a good idea to get it the width you need. Hills of Devon are a firm that many have recommended for weldmesh.
Heras panels are strong and foxproof, and it would certainly help reduce the mud problem if you could cover the top to help keep it dry, and fit a gutter and water butt to catch the rain before it blows in under the edge. But it will be best to use the rainwater for your plants, as you'll find it'll get contaminated with droppings from birds landing on the run roof, also dust, leaves etc, and won't be safe enough for the birds to drink.
These Monotex tarps are good, extremely strong and long-lasting, easy to fit and secure. They come in either clear or green.

As well as foxes, I would imagine that security against two- legged predators will also be in your mind. What will you do for a door, and what's the site like generally?

It doesn't need to be buried but you will need your mesh skirt to come outwards (or inwards) by at least 30cm, I secure mine with lots of tent pegs.

Thanks both for the advice.

The site is pretty safe so I am not too worried, but I am planning to cut out a door in one side and then make a wooden frame to hold the piece I cut out. then on the wood frame i can add hinges/bolts/padlocks.
