i keep my pekins in a twelve by ten stable the door is four foot
and above that a three foot wire grid and the little dears still keep
flying out over the grid i didnt think they could fly that high for such a little
pom pom of a bird has anyone else got this problem or just me
tony

Ha , ha ---mine know as soon as I switch off the electric netting to get in run and flap off into forbidden fox territory! Ros

I started keeping pekins 2 years ago. everything I read told me they don't fly much and a 4 foot fence will keep them in. yeah right. I penned them half the garden to free range with 5 foot high wire and they were over it in a flash. there run is now 7 foot high with a roof on and when they know i'm coming to let them free range my little milli pekin flies right to the top! :o . lucky for me so far they seem happy to potter about in the garden and haven't tried to go over the fence to next door.

They don't actually 'fly'. They can go a few feet from a standing position and sort of just launch themselves upwards and over. An electric fence can be gotten over if they really want to but wing clipping usually solves this easily.

But flying any kind of actual distance a level height from the ground doesn't happen. They can sort of flap, jump and propel themselves along for a bit but flying it ain't

Pekins are like 'bouncing bombs' saw an old black and white movie(a few times now)I think it's called The Damn Busters, bout a bouncing bomb that bounces accrossa lake and explodes when it bounces into the damm.
Pekins are definitly bouncing bombs  .
Mine don't bounce very high at all though, they'd struggle to bounce over 2'.

bouncing bombs!. I like it. thats is what they are alright .

Hi all im new to this place, and new to any chickens, i bought my beautiful collin on a whim cos he was soooo good looking and then found out about him ( golden partridge ), found him two girlfriends silver and hazel. They have just started to lay :D. What I REALLY want to know is what colours do i have to start with to breed lemon cuckoo or lavendar/ lavendar cuckoo? Also can i breed any fab colours from collin by buying a particular colour hen? All info apprecieated. I have them in my stables which are a dutch barn type and they havnt made it over the wall or doors yet although they bounce up on to the 50 gallon drum to perch pretty easily? :geek:

hey fragel, your chooks sound fab, i love pekins, :D
http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html is what i use to calculate colours of matings, and i know lavender is a dilution of red, unlike blue which is a dilution of black.
I'm not expert on these things tho so i can't help much more
good luck

Don;t have problems with pekins but have a speckled sussex that gets over his 10ft enclosure by flying onto the hen house roof which is 7ft high and then over the enclosure.

that's because 'bouncing bombs' aka pekins can't bounce that high.He isn't getting in your neighbours garden is he?

Hi Lydia
No none of my birds can get out of the paddock, that fence is 15ft high and complete fox/flying cockerel proof! :D

I thought it was high, couldn't remember how high.LOL,if he could find a pole he'd vault over :D .Glad they can't get into your neighbours, yours are not the best.

Hah ! Love the 'bouncing bomb' description of Pekins ! Very apt !
We have two different blood lines of Pekins, and interestingly one lot are good flyers, and have always flown, where as the other lot are not great at flying, and not really bothered either !
I think it is a personal thing, some are more likely to fly than others.

I've noticed that Pekins are more prone to flying than the larger size chooks. One of mine (bearded Aracauna) is a real sook and if something scares her when she's freeranging, she flies back to the hen house shrieking, when I look there's nothing there. But my white Pekin is a good flier, one day I opened the hen house door and she happened to be sitting on the perch in there and the next thing she launched herself past me and straight over the hedge into the neighbour's place. Neighbour was standing on her lawn at the time with her young son in her arms and the expression on the little chap's face was priceless! Anyway I got the chook back, she flew back over again. After that day I renamed her, she is now known as Artilla!
