Very proud... :D

Mai - the girl who was poorly when we first got her layed her first egg on Saturday!

She spent most of the day acting very unsettled, checking out all hedges (!) in and out of the coop, very chatty and coming over to us regularly - lots of squatting for us too!

Finally shut her in the run as I didn't like the idea of her fancying the neighbours hedge as a nest and when the regular layer went in to do her laying they were in the coop together for a while. When they came out and I checked the coop there were two perfect eggs side by side - as though Ebrill had shown her what to do and where to do it (not in the nest boxes but hey ho!)

There was another there this morning - before I even managed to let them out at 7.45am!! :-)08 :-)08

Brilliant - sort of like helping a teenager through puberty, isn't it? First eggs are always a thrill, (also when they start laying again after a long gap in the winter, like Nutmeg and Marigold have just done.) Signs of Spring!

I'm very pleased for you and her Cuwiar. Evidence that just because a hen is ill, it shouldn't be given up on. My greatest excitement was when Lucy Legbar laid her first egg after having coccidiosis as a chick. The second greatest was when she laid her first egg after being diagnosed terminal by the vet again. She had a huge lump in her abdomen and the vet said basically don't waste your money on her. Few days later and I lifted two dustpans full of wet bedding from under her perch. Next day one dustpan and she was noticeably lighter and smaller behind. 6 days later and she started laying again. It was some kind of burst cyst, ratherthan the tumour originally thought. She's been in the wars all her life -see 'scaley and puffy faced legbar' thread. Still happy but a bit slow.

Mai's is the smaller, paler one on the left - not bad for a first attempt - she's starting small, but who can blame her? I think I'd want to start small if egg laying was my job!! :-)07

Well done, Mai! It is so fantastic when you nip down the garden and find the first egg....but I still think it's a wonderful thing 100 eggs down the line! :-)17

:D :D Well done!

When we had first eggs laid I sent the pics of them (complete with a little note next to them which read 'first eggs + date' emailed to friends. They are a tolerant bunch!

We must be crazy :-)07

Oh and I agree on the egg size too ;)
