Sorry but I just have to let you all know one of our hens has just laid it first egg. :D This is the first time we have kept hens, we've had them less than 2 weeks and we not only got one egg in the morning but another one during the day. How cool is that.

Ahh..... Isn't it exciting?
Makes you realise just how miracuolous an egg really is, not to mention the clever girlies!!

I am still appreciative, 5 months on, and thank each and everyone of my girlies when they have laid. (As they make suck a racket after laying its not difficult to praise the right one!)

Enjoy, and marvel ;)

Congratulations!
I had my first egg from my sabelpoots about a month ago, I had a smile on my face all that day.
I now get an egg from each of my 3 girls everyday, which is fortunate as it takes 3 sabelpoot eggs to equal the size of the eggs I used to buy

We've now had three eggs in three days. :D

We are still feeding them 'growers mash' does anyone know when we should start introducing 'layers pellets'. I thought about starting introducing a few pellets at a time and then switching over to layers within 2-3 weeks or should I keep them on 'growers' for a few more weeks.

As soon as my poots started laying I began to introduce layers pellet.
This was done gradually over the course of a week.
I then left it another week or so before eating any eggs, just to make sure the coccidiostat from the medicated growers pellets was out of their systems.

What is coccidiostat? I thought the growers just had enhanced nutrients?

HI ,i thought the same as you. if you read hippie chicks post " is this a record" on june 22 it might explain a bit nore.i had loads of questions too and this post really helped me :)

Thanks Tim for the link. I've just checked the growers mash - It is Marriages Poultry Growers Mash and going through the ingredients couldn't find any mention of ACS.

It has : Oil (3.3%), Protein (15%), Fibre (5.0%), Ash (5.4%), Lysine Methionine (0.3%), Vit A, Vit D3, Vit E, Copper, BHT and Phyzyme.

So hopefully its OK to eat the eggs :?

looks like they are ok,had a look at the feed site, appears only the chick crumbs are ACS. Enjoy!!!!

Yes, I think you are right, Marriages only put ACS in their chick crumbs, (aimed at chicks 0 to 8 weeks) all their other feeds are ACS free.

I knew that egg tasted good :D

Yes, that's right Marriages Poultry Growers are usually ACS free - I'm using some here for my ducklings.

Tim
