Hi, in the incubator I have a Heinz 57 clutch of eggs, the Dad was a Polish Chamois Frizzle and the mum was a Skyline, Bovan nero and a Speckledy :-)07 . Dad was only with us for a few days but he was determined to make his mark, even if he had to get a ladder out!

Of the six, the Speckledys started but then failed to develop, however the other four candled well. Today is day 21 and I have done all the usual things like adding water.
By yesterday morning I could hear chirping coming from one of the eggs and it hatched out fine this morning, dead on the dot. :-)17 However at the moment there is an ominous silence frorm the rest :-)06 . I am told that normally you can wait until the end of day 22 before calling a halt, but has anone had a 24 hr gap between the first egg hatching and the sounds of further life :-)19 ? The one little chick looks so lonely on its own.
Thanks

Pam

Hi,

Thanks. Should I give up by tomorrow evening? I heard that if they go longer than 22 days they tend to have problems with their feet. I would hate to have to cull any, I am useless at that.

Pam

Hello, no, leave them at least another day- feet problems are normally caused by too much humidity . If the incy is a little under temp then some will take longer to hatch. You could candle them and see if they have broken into the air sac.
regards, Davidd :)

We wait until at least day 23. Counting from day zero as the day they go in. Broke one with no signs of life once and killed the little thing. Can try light tap on the egg with a pencil and they should tap back. Mummy does that to encourage them out. But don't overdo it as you need to keep the heat in and the humidity up.

Ok, will do as you suggest. No signs of life still, as dead as a dodo. I am feeling really quite gloomy

Yes as long as you're fairly quick. You might as well leave them alone at this stage, give them another couple of days, then discard them.

Today, still dead as a dodo. put them to my ear, cant hear any pecking, rather ominous.

I have some other eggs in the incubator, another 14 days to go. Do you think I could add them to this one when they arrive? Hes all one his own........I am not sure if chicks will go for each other at this age?

That's worrying CB. Can't mix chicks easily after a week as they have formed into flocks and a big one is likely to injure the little ones. They need company so you will have to find another chick the same age. Any breeders near you?

We've been in exactly the same situation and made a 40 mile dash next day to get three more. At that age they are inexpensive and best get several in case you have problems during rearing.

Thanks, I have done, I added some more today. I asked the breeder is I could add the new hatch outs in ten days time and he said yes?

Pam

I gather that my friend who used the same eggs only got one hatch out of six as well...............

I mix chicks that are about a week to 10 days apart, and while as Chris says they do forms flocks, they seem to integrate without too much of a problem. The issue is the difference in size for me, so I try and watch carefully to see that all goes well.

Thanks, the first chc#ick is smaller than the rest because the dad was a Bantam, so far everypones fine thanks

Pam

Candled them seem formed but no sign of movement and have not broken through into the egg sac.
