just had a strang encounter with a young male ferret in my garden, i have 7 gingernut rangers and a collection of small bantams, they all free range round the garden, all of a sudden they were making a strange noise, went into the garden and lo and behold the chickens had pounced of the ferret and had it pinned down, unbeliveably i had to rescue the poor ferret, anyone else encountered chucks ganging up on anything before, confused

That's really interesting and contrary to everthing we've been led to believe. Was it just one chicken or were there more than one involved.

I have a bluebell hen and she is a lot bigger than my others. She has appointed herself flock protector even though she isnt head chook.

She will chase and sometimes catch anything that comes into the garden. So far she has seen off pigeons, a rat [she actually caught it too] and heaven help any cat that dares to wander through her patch.

no it was all 7 gingernut rangers, and a 3 little bantams theyre not scared of anything cos i have 3 recued staffy terriers who all mooch round the garden together, our top chuck "ninja" looked to be the instergator but the poor ferret which is now in an indoor rabbit hutch in my kitchen was taking a major kicking had to hose some chickens down to free the poor ferret, never seen or heard of such behaviour/violence from chucks before, thats why i thought id ask,, hope she doesnt get too big for her boots now and start on my dogs that could confuse things

found its owner apparently its a working ferret, been out working and the owner never locked it away properly, was more surprised than me that it never attacked my girls and that all the injuries inflicted on it came from my chicks go girls show them how its done lol

You were incredibly lucky! I've had my Poultry stocks completely decimated by stray ferrets in the past, and usually, the stroppiest of hens/cockerels is no deterrent to their murderous intentions!

sounds like ive been lucky then either that or i have real stroppy hens lol, saying that the lead hen (ninja the kids named her) Will on occasions have a go at the dogs if they dare to take a bone into the garden
