After fighting a losing battle with starlings I’ve ordered a new feeder. It’s electric and dispenses a set amount of food at predetermined times. It has a sound that once they get used to it will tell the chickens that food is available. I’ve ordered the one that is powered by a solar panel. Hope it works!

Starlings are intelligent and resourceful birds, as you know to your cost, HenGen. I shall be interested to know which species learns to respond to the dinner gong first - chickens or starlings. Do keep us posted!

Is this it? How will a feeder that scatters enough food for your chickens round 360 degrees prevent starlings from getting it? Just asking!

This is a specially designed automatic feeder that simply mounts to the bottom of a barrel containing feed.
It is perfect for feeding poultry and Game as well as fish and livestock Automatic feeders are a tremendous asset to poultry and game keepers in many situations. Knowing that your birds are being fed even if you are not there to do it, can lift a tremendous amount of responsibility in a busy schedule.
This Automatic Feeder Kit can be used with any metal or plastic container to turn a simple feeder into a reliable dispenser. The complete kit contains a timer, a motor, a spinner plate. It also comes with full instructions for setting the timer.

The timer is a digital display timer clock that can be programmed to feed 1 to 6 times per 24 hours. The motor can also be controlled to run for between 1 and 60 seconds per feed. Depending on how often and how long you set the timer, the feeder can feed from 1 - 360 Birds (Pheasant, Duck, Chickens etc.). Food will be scattered buy the spinner plate in a 360 degree circle around the hopper.
The feeder can also be adjusted to spin at either 25, 50, 75 or 100% power to vary the distance it spreads the feed from the barrel. Also the higher the feeder is placed the greater distance it will spread feed. Therefore feed can be spread from 1m - 7 meters. The 6 volt model has a 6 volt motor. Specifications: Powered by 6 volt battery. - a 12 volt 4ah spade connection battery gives best results. Not Included (should cost approx. £5 - £8). Battery fits inside the unit.

The feeder spreads the feed in a full 360 degree circle, for maximum coverage. Feeder Size- 19cm x 19cm x 24cm I use these feeders myself and Guarantee that this is the best model on the market irrespective of price (you can pay twice the cost of this and it won’t be as good!

Good luck Hen-Gen. I hope your hens catch on faster than the starlings...

Yes, marigold, that’s the one. It will be in their shed with the solar panel mounted on the roof. I’ll leave them shut in for a few days so they learn to associate the sound with food. If the starlings get wise to it I’ll change the times that the food is dispensed.
Here’s hoping!

How are they getting on, HenGen, or is it still too early to ask? I'm lucky I don't have trouble with starlings, just a couple of robins and some hedge sparrows, however, I try to deter those with fatballs and seeds in another area.

Looks very high tech, hope it does the trick. will be interested to see the results once you have it up and running.
