Calling all favorelle experts! Have your favorelles come into lay yet?

We got Bella as a pullet last summer and she still hasn't come into lay yet. We don't have any other favorelles to compare her to but even last year's pekin bantam has now started laying, whilst Bella is showing no signs. I know the heavier breeds take longer to mature but is this normal?

Thanks

I've got one which hatched last Aug who is laying and 2 others who hatched in October and have not yet come into lay.

I would have thought she would be in lay right now...does she look ready?

Mine has laid first egg when she was 37 weeks old.She started in February hatched on 27th may 2011.
Somtimes a hen who is low in pecking order may not lay for a while propobly due the stress of beeing in low position.I have read that they prone to bulling from other hens.Today mine top hen made such an alarm in the cop that I went out to ivestigate. She was shouting on Salmon Faveroles when she was traing enter her nest box.She was patiently waited for Dorking to finish in front of the nest box but she was not having anyone to come.I have put Salmon Faveroles in to another nest box and she happily laid her egg there. All this noise for nothig :-)07

ours are laying but the brahmas are not yet i have added a couple of new nesting boxes in the run so they have one each now

Just wanted to share the news that Bella our favorelle has finally started laying. We have only had 4 eggs so far and each of them have been this strange bullet shape (see pic).

Do you think they will become normal eventually?

She doesn't lay in the nestbox either but on the ground in the downstairs run area. Having said that we haven't had any more for about a week now. Are favorelles usually pretty regular once they get going?

In regard to egg laying, early maturing, egg size, there are often big differences within a breed depending on whether the breeder has taken account of this when mating the birds. If you keep breeding from poor layers, the number of eggs declines with each generation.

We have a few Wyandottes that lay quite pointy eggs and we won't be breeding from them. They started very pointy and gradually rounded off a bit but still won't sit properly in the egg boxes. One of the first books I got advised against hatching pointy eggs. We also had some who laid late and infrequently but have improved considerably in their second year. But that's quite a big egg Pony Girl. If you get plenty of those for the table I expect you will be happy.

Yes, they still taste yummy though bit hard to get the yolk out if you break pointy end first! I had one week when we she laid three eggs - thought she was on a roll then but she hasn't actually laid since. Definitely a strange one!
