Good blog post on the Dyfi Osprey Project, about how to stay safe and totally anonymous on Facebook, whilst still enjoying the ability to watch whatever sites you choose, eg osprey projects.

I use FB to keep in touch with family overseas. As my brother always says though, we need to keep in mind that with Facebook, we are the "product" being marketed! So, yes, keep your privacy settings locked down, and above all, hide your friends list, and never use FB to sign in to anything.

I'm actually trying to cut way back on my online time generally. Several friends are too, and a few have now deleted the FB app from their phones, and only use it when on laptop/tablet. One friend, a young mum, said she stayed off FB for a whole week, and said she was mortified when her husband remarked "Have you been Spring cleaning or decluttering or something? The house is so spotless!" It's just amazing how much time it eats up! I've taken up knitting again after many (many!) years, and am really enjoying it! I don't have tv, so it's nice to sit and knit in the evenings.

I tend to agree, LadyA. I'm not registered with Faceache and don't own a mobile phone. Now I'm sure that there are a thousand reasons for owning one to do with safety and convenience but it irks me that no conventions have grown up regarding the etiquette of using them. They seem to have replaced normal forms of interaction for many people. Recently I've had text messages on my landline, a mechanical voice reads them to me. Can't people spend 10P and leave a message on my answer phone. Maybe I'm just a grumpy old Luddite!

I've recently started using FB to follow Glaslyn, Dyfi and the birding group. Great photos to look at!
Have limited the temptation to be checking in too often by having a very cheap SIM with mobile data turned off so it's only on WiFi. Been doing that for a while anyway.
Faceache :D Carol calls it Arsebook!
It's OK, It's designed to increase marketing effect through grouping interests (and less wholesomely opinion). Poultry keepers are immune!

Can't be bothered with Facebook either. People round this area are glued to their phones and Facebook, irks me the amount of parents on their phone, either on facebook or internet, totally oblivious to what their children are up to. They could have a child abducted by aliens and wouldn't notice. We were out for a meal and two families were at a table all just sitting busy with their phones, not a word passed between them all meal. Wondered why they got together for a meal

Not interested in bookface either. I do subscribe to YouTube channels I'm interested in and instagram.

People don't seem to realise that if you download the Fbook app onto your phone / tablet, you give permission for Facebook to read all of your texts & emails on the device. They deliberately make the T's & C's ridiculously long-winded to discourage people from reading them.

I'm so glad that this forum hasn't moved onto Facebook :-)09

It's not just what you do online though. FB has the right to be contacted by their "partners" about your activity offline. For example, other businesses work with FB (presumably because it's profitable to do so), and if, for example you buy something (not online, but in a shop) and pay with your card, then the info of what you bought is shared with FB. So they can better target you with advertising. And it's in the T&Cs that they can do this!
