Daffodil, our last remaining hybrid (Merrydale RIR), came in tonight at 7.00pm as usual for a feed and then bed at 8.30pm. But she didn't want to eat and dashed, as fast as her poor swollen little feet would carry her, into the dining room and started wandering about in the corners. We couldn't find her for a while. I picked her up and took her to food and water in the kitchen but she wouldn't settle and went out of the back door and down the steps heading back towards the Orchard it seems, very excited about something and talking constantly to us. Looked like she wanted to lay!
So I took her to her day coop in the Orchard at about 7.30pm and put her in the nestbox, returning at 8.30pm to find a happy quiet little girl and a big freshly laid egg!
So she laid her egg at around 8.00pm, which has got to be the latest lay we have ever had by about 3 hours. We generally collect all the eggs at 4.00pm because it is so rare we get any more. Has anyone else had a hen lay an egg that late in the day?
