Keep meaning to ask this question....

One of my ex-batts is particularly 'oven ready' especially around the bottom and on her back. Is there anything you can put on to protect the skin in such circumstances? I put baby sunblock on my white eared cat but havent done so with this little lady in case chickens and sunblock dont mix!

Anyone had this problem before?

Marie

PS The very same girl who was under the weather yesterday for no good reason seems to have picked up a bit today (fingers crossed) and I am now wondering if her reddish bottom is sunburn?

I am sure they must be prone to sunburn -As well as being oven ready they will have had no sun exposure.I am sure sunlock is a good idea and won't cause a problem.Ros

You can also buy poultry saddles that are supposed to protect the birds from cockerels (they lose fethers on the back when he is treading) that can also be used to protect against sunburn.

I am just trying out some 'Butterfly Saddles' for a review and so far, they are very good because they protect the back and wings.

You can see the Chickenbreeder poultry saddle page by following the link

I've been finding out more about ex-batts because I'm getting some soon and it is advised that you put sunblock on them. I use a high factor baby and children one for my guinea pig (don't ask!)
Hope that helps.

It took my oven ready ex batts 4 weeks to feather up . Well done in rehoming the old girls they will I hope give you many years of pleasure.

Thanks for your advice again - it is so nice to have somewhere to go and get answers (and so quickly) :)

Love the poultry saddles and butterfly saddles Tim, what a brilliant idea. I am already thinking that the fleecy butterfly ones may well be a good idea for the winter, we shall have to see how my girls fare. At the moment tho this lady has a very bare bum as well which unfortunately a saddle wouldnt protect. So the sunblock is looking the best bet methinks in this case.

I must say how I am enjoying my ex-batts and chicken husbandry in general... lets see how I feel the other side of winter ;)

I am imagining a bald piggy Judith - having had & bred G/pigs for over 22yrs, nothing would surprise me ;)
