Good morning everyone,

I have a question. Although I am several weeks away from having to deal with this, where is the best place to store eggs (unfertilized)? In the frig, in a cardboard egg carton, or on the counter top at room temp?? We usually go through 12 - 18 eggs a week.

Thanks,
Wrigley

We store ours in the cellar at 12 degrees Centigrade and 80% humidity in carboard trays. They 'dry out' in the fridge apparently because of the low humidity and we are not allowed to store them there by regulation if they are for sale. But for short periods for your own consumption fridge is probably best. At room temperature the stored life reduces. If they are fertile the blastoderm continues growing and is noticeable after a week. You need a system that tells you how old the eggs are and in what order to eat them.

we just leave ours on the kitchen side its rare they hang around longr then 48 hrs but at the mo i have bit of a back log  but i will eat the older ones and sell the fresher ones .

£1 for 6 or £2 for 12 .
i dropped the price from £1.20 to £1 but most people still give me the 1.20 sometimes more .

We disregard the Defra regulations and sell Mediums at £1.30 and Large at £1.60. Last year I calculated, excluding any capital costs, it cost £1.90 for us to produce 6 eggs. This is due to vet and medication costs and we have a very good and inexpensive vet. Excluding those we make a small profit. We re-use egg boxes which is also against Defra regulations, but it saves us the cost of new boxes at 6p each -it all adds up!

Despite being cheaper for Free Range eggs than local shops and the Supermarket we still get people who see the price and walk away. But you can get Battery Hen eggs for less!

As far as I know we don't have any regs here. A lot of people put a cooler near the road with a sign and a change box, and go with the "Honor System". They ask anywhere from $2.00 to $3.00 and dozen. With the eggs I (hope to) get, I just want enough to cover the cost of feed........Speaking of feed, I gave the girls table scrapes for the first time last night. On their menu was....Pasta w/Meat sauce, tossed salad, watermelon and some left over bologna. It took them a couple of minuets to figure out what it was, but, after that, they devoured it! I wish I hadn't waited so long to start raising chickens.

where are you from ? p.s make sure you have plenty of room they are addictive

I know and I don't. I started this past March with 12, one died at about 4 weeks old. The people here on this site were a HUGE help. :-)08 After about the first four weeks I went to a feed store and saw they had some other breeds that I didn't have ,so, I bought 6 more, 3 different breeds. :-)07. So, now with 17, I really wouldn't mind having a few more. Just not in the pre-laying stage. I've had enough of the chick stage for a while.
Maybe a couple of Bantams or Silkies, something smaller.

Just go easy on the scraps Wrigley as if they get fat they don't lay. Avoid meat products. It's against the 'law' here to feed meat products to poultry apparently for health reasons. Also raw meat can turn them cannibal -and you won't want that!

Ours like pasta and rice as well -neither any good for them.

wow rhode island :D :D , i would also agree with chris lay of the scraps maybe give them it just once a week as a treat ., mine very rarely get any scraps if anything they only get freshly grown greens that they have to wait for each summer  .

Thanks again for the great info. This was the first time I've given them table scrapes. I will limit it to a few times a month. As for the meat products go, I won't do that again. I'm still learning :?
So, Chris, do you still give yours rice and pasta?

we are always learning no matter what animal we have i wait for an old italian couple to make thiers and the girls get the leftovers they seem to prefer it  not sure if its the home made sauce or not and i know its all meat free but sometimes when i do it and i have to much left over then mine get a bit of quorn mince thrown in , i was once told that we learn everyday by our animals wether we see it or not as they are the smart ones not us .
