I have a hen who recently went a bit off colour and stopped laying for about a week, she has now picked up and started to lay again but her egg's are only about half the size they were before, is this normal and will they return to the size they were before. She is about 3 years old.

Sometimes eggs do vary in size but I would check she has access to Soluble grit - oystershell so she has sufficient calcium to form good egg shells and that she is not overweight (too much corn typically being the problem - a handfull per day as a treat max). If she is fit and healthy, chances are it's only temporary.

Let us know how she gets on. ;)

Is egg size affected much by stress? I just got my orps and they're laying some eggs which are the same size as my pekin.

Are they pol Osric? Stress would normally stop a hen from laying completely,if it is their first laying season they will be smaller and gradually get bigger.

Hi Ozric,

If they are young, POL the eggs will be smaller to start with but will increase with time.
