HI all
I have a broody hen that has been sitting on eggs for 5 days now, and i was wondering how do i know these eggs are fertile. Yes i have a rooster and he is a active bugger. She has when i last looked 4 of her eggs and two bantam eggs. Looks like the bantam goes to her nest lays a egg and she rolls them in.
Another question, the rooster has been doing the deed with one of the bantams too, is this possible and will there be chicks if fertile. Just got them a handsome bantam rooster as i feel the rooster is so big and can hurt them.
Stupid question i know but i think my one bantam hen is in love with my big rooster. She does not leave him and is a few cm away from him where ever he goes.
I really would not like her to sit on eggs for nothing, but i must say when i come near she makes this funny noise so i stay our, she was off the nest two days ago, but not today.
Thanks
Hannelore

Hi
Firstly I would move your broody away from your other hens as if they are also laying in her nest she will end up with too many eggs for her to manage and also will hatch at different days.
Check fertility by candeling them at around 7 - 1o days using a candeling lamp, if you do not have one I have heard people use a bright torch and a loo roll! If fertile you will see red veigns.
Take the broody off the eggs each day for drink and feed.
