Hi, I am new to ducks although I have kept chickens for some time. i just wondered if ducks should go into their house at dusk the same as the chickens, as mine seem to prefer sitting in their run and I have had to put them in the house well after dark. Grateful for any advice

Hello, you will need to put them to bed- although they will get the idea soon- they are not like chickens and will need to be put into their secure night housing.
regards, David :)

Yes, mine do get into the routine = after a few months they start to go into their house when it's dark as they know I'll be out to shoo them in

I have moved one group of ducks to a different house and shut them out of the old one, they keep going to the old house, even after a week.

Creatures of habbit :D

Thanks for the help, at least I now no I will have to have a bedtime roundup. Chickens are easy

My two Abacots and three Calls really surprised me , I thought they'd be a nightmare to get in their house as they have the run of the whole garden , but at dusk they gather by the door and the Abacot female leads them all in good as gold , the fact that they have had the same house since hatching has made the difference , just shut the door within 30 minutes or they'll be out again .

My ducks go in on their own now but it has taken 4 or 5 months for them to get used to their house and the routine and they go in after the chickens when it is completely dark.

The geese on the other hand will only go in when I go into the field and say 'Bed Geese" they plod along and know the routine but given half a chance would stay out all night...

mine will say out all night unless i go up there but as soon as ai say bed thats it they go straight to bed (most nights lol) flower who i hatched my self had the comand from a baby and she seems to of showed the others by standing on the ramp and quaking if they dont come she walks down and quacks again repets tll they get it
but the others are defently stupid compaired to the chickens im putting flower in for mensa

Luckily I don't have to shut mine in at night time, think I would go grey overnight :-)07

Mine hang around the out side of there house making noises for me to come out and put them away, on the odd time they dont i just go to the end of the garden and walk them down to there house
