Duckling - Possibly Splayed Legs?

Sorry for making my first post asking for help, but I'm desperate to help this little duckling. I've also posted on a couple of forums as I really want to get as much advice as possible - so sorry if you're read this already elsewhere!

My duck hatched him and 9 others on 08/08 and the poor thing can't walk properly. She originally attacked him, but when I tried to take him away she got very defensive and started to look after him. On Sunday we let them out into our garden for the first time and he really struggled, his mother kept looking after him and running when he got stuck but eventually he rolled into the river. We fished him out and I decided at that point it'd be best for us to take him in and see if we can help him. Now we've taken him, she's a lot more relaxed with us being around her and seems happier with the other 9. They're all black magpie ducks.

I've heard of splayed leg in ducks but I'm not sure if that's what he's suffering from? He's eating and drinking (though it's difficult for him to get to it sometimes) and when I've held him he seems generally healthy, he's perfectly capable of jumping quite a distance. But he does shake his head sometimes - I'm nervous that he's got a brain problem but he's perfectly fine otherwise.

I tried to get a video when we took him in and this was the best I could do:

He's often falling on his back like that and I keep trying to correct him but it's not long before he's back again (I felt bad leaving him for the video, but wanted everyone to see how he was). I've since got him a ridged towel that's made it easier for him to hook his claws into and right himself.

Here's a picture of him when we took him in as well:

I've strapped his legs with vetrap since Monday night and though he's still not walking, it certainly feels like he's improved (though maybe I'm looking with optimistic eyes). He's definitely got an appetite and he seems a lot more confident, but not really stable on his feet (almost as if he has no balance). I've not had to do this before so I've read as much as I can and hopefully I've done it correctly. I'd love any help or advice anyone might have who's already been through this!

I'm grateful for any help or advice anyone can give, thanks in advance guys!

Welcome :)
He is adorable.
This looks more complex than splayed legs to me.
Just to check a couple of things, is he on non medicated starter crumb? I have seen medicated crumb do this to ducklings.
If his food is ok, then I would say he has balance issues, you are doing the right thing by him, cant quite see the hobble you have on him, but they have to be put on in just the right place in order for them to stop the splay and enable walking. If he cant walk in the hobble then it will need adjusting, soft wood rather than plaster tape between the legs sometimes works better, nothing thicker than about 4-5mm.
You could take him to a vet but at this stage unless they to quite a few tests they likely wont be able to say what is wrong with him. It could just be he has developmental issues which may sadly mean he wont make it. Keep an eye out for seizures, which also go along with head hsaking and drool from the nostrils.
Good luck with this little one, he looks so precious.

Thanks Zo!

I was afraid of that - it didn't seem straight forward to me either. He's on non-medicated feed, water and the occasional maggot (father is a fisherman and he goes crazy for them). Though I'm pretty sure he's been like this since he hatched, there was an odd knocking noise coming from the duck house the day they were born (which we put down to eggs being moved around - my duck ended up sitting on 28 eggs).

When I get back from work I'll get some better photos of the hobble on him, I've followed the guides I could find on the web for it but would love expert advice directly! He can walk, gingerly, if we support him on one side - and I've seen him take an occasional step on his own. I was going to take him to the vet but was worried they'd just say to put him down.

He was very very weak the first couple of days we had him in, but he seems to have turned around, he's very energetic and almost a bit cheeky! My retired mother has been making sure he eats and drinks hourly and has been making him stand up and work his legs a bit. He's not had any drooling, but he seems to find it hard to control his head. He's definitely no smaller than his siblings.

He's very precious to us, taken the whole family's hearts. He's a real little character. We'll do anything we can for little Tufty.

Thank you so much for your quick reply and help! Really means a lot!

Hi Kyle, and welcome from me, too.
One of our members posted a link about splayed legs, I think it was last year so you might have missed it. In case you're interested, its here

Good luck with the little chap, I hope he makes it.

Hi Marigold,

Thanks for the welcome - a really nice community you guys have here! That post was actually the one that brought me to the forum and it's instructions were what I was trying to follow as religiously as possible!

This is how we have him at the moment. It seems a lot closer than when we put it on him though! We're going to redo this later tonight so any input from you guys would be really appreciated.

I'm trying to get a video of this up on Youtube so you can see better but it's playing up at the moment. As soon as I can I'll post it for you though.

Quick update before I'm off to bed - I've redone Tufty's hobble, it's thinner and slightly further apart now. Still just below his knee.

I could make something with balsa wood if that'd be better, but I'm not sure what would work well? If you have any examples I'd love to see them!!
