Duckling mortality

We have kept ducks as pets for some years but we lost our favourite duck to a fox a month or so ago and decided we would try to incubate the last egg which she laid. We had never done this before although we did have a small incubator available.

All went well - the egg hatched on 28th June and we had a really big healthy duckling which was eating well.

However, yesterday when checking the duckling we found it on it's back with it's legs thrashing around. It seemed to be having a convulsion. When it stopped moving I tried heart massage and blowing gently down its mouth but it died.

Does anyone have any idea what would have caused this.

Hmmn interesting, can't point you in any directions as to what that may have been. When a duckling dies on me i just beleive it just wasn't meant to be, but to have a healthy duckling feeding well etc its probably quite frustrating for you, sorry for your loss! I hope somebody on this board can point you in a direction as to what could of happend!
