hello.

just after some advice please.

my duck (approx 1 1/2 years old)has developed a soft swelling under her rear end over matter of weeks/months (very slowly getting bigger). she is happy, eating, laying and pooing normally.
the swelling has no palpable debris /egg in it and just appears soft and squidgy. the concern now is it has started to drag/catch on the floor and has rubbed the feathers off a patch. also has a slight abrasion. It is normal temperature to touch and is normal skin colour (not angry or inflamed). she is not appearing in any pain when i gently squeezed it. I can't tell whether it is just a fluid filled mass (seroma) or whether something a little more complicated/worrying and requiring veterinary intervention. .

apologies for the poor photo
i would be grateful for any advice

many thanks
Neil

Hi Scubamedic and welcome. The gradual swelling looks like a collection of fluid, either due to a tumour, or egg contents. This is more common in upright ducks for example runners. Sometimes the duck is able to absorb the egg contents however more often than not it will requires aspiration. The best thing is to take her to a vet who is experienced with ducks/chickens. I have had a couple of runners with this problem, and have had fluid aspirated, they are both fine and well, 2 years later.

Hiya :) Sorry for the late response. Good shout from Foxy. Def worth a vet check. Can you keep us posted?

thanks everyone. appreciate your imput. will pop her to the vets and see what they have to say.

My duck is experiencing the same thing. She is generally happy. And I am struggling to find a vet that will see her.
Is it possible for anyone else to help with the aspiration?

I'd love to hear what your vet has to say. Hope your duckie turns out to be okay. :)

Sorry forgot to post back.

My vet feels it is a mass :-(

wasn't happy to aspirate swelling without knowing more. Offered xrays etc but she's happy, eating and doing everything normally, and doesn't appear to be suffering as a result. swelling doesn't seem to be getting any bigger or if it is, then its not noticeable.

So sadly she's on borrowed time really, if anything changes with her, then she will be euthanised.

Thanks for everyone's help
Neil
