I'm thinking of adding some ducks to our garden however it will have to be in a fenced area as there is quite a busy road just wondering what's the best for eggs and wich won't fly away also got youg children so would like a friendly breed

For eggs, Indian Runners and Khaki Campbells are the better layers but most light weight domestic ducks give reasonable returns on eggs. Derivatives of runners are also pretty good - Abacot Ranger for example that I keep :-)

Domestics can't fly due to their weight, with the exception of Call ducks which can be rather good at flying off until settled. Any that can take a run and get off the ground with a head wind can't usually get far and you can always clip one wing slightly to stop the odd one getting over a low fence if necessary.

I have Khaki Campbells and they dont fly we hatched ours so they are extremely friendly and dont mind having a cuddle every now and again... but the aylesbury ladies we have are by miles the most sociable creatures on earth..... they are quite large and there for can not fly either. Love the way they just all waddle in a row love watching them.
