one of my speckledys has been a bit off for about 5 days now, she is still eating and drinking but a bit quiet and likes to be left on her own at times, I don't think she has layed an egg now since Friday and is about a year old, my initital thought was she had been bullied as one of the older hens likes to nip her and her sister on the head at times (showing whos boss) to day whilst poo picking the run she droped an odd shaped thing, photo attached. has any one got any idea of what it is and cause and possible remedy, could it be that she is coming in to molt.

I think that is what's known as a 'lash' Flynnoflynn. Thanks for the fantastic photos -I've never seen one cut in half before! A lash is shed oviduct lining. Not sure why they do this- perhaps response to some irritation? She won't lay for a while now anyway. Generally a couple of weeks but I had one went a year!

Those are great pictures of a lash , flynnoflynn. Not harmful to the hen, just a bit creepy for you to find it I expect. See this thread http://poultrykeeperforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5954&p=33873&hilit=lash#p33873 for more pics and links to other sites.

I'd never seen this before, thanks for posting your photos up, will now know it when I see it.
