Dottie Hen - Myco update

Hi folks,
Well it's been a week since I started my little Pekin Dot on her Baytril twice daily, took her to the vet as today was D Day and........ She's on the mend!!!!
I am totally delighted. She has put on 30% body mass already (last week she was only 460g, this week she's a whopping 600!) and the vet told me he really didn't think she would have made it... My little lady is obviously a fighter... Her right eye is still very swollen and shut but the vet has said as long as I am happy to continue the antibiotics long term then there is every chance she and her eye will come back to good health.
Back again next Wednesday for another check up so keep everything crossed she continues to improve... and yes I am buzzing!! I don't feel like such a s**t mum after all I must be doing something right!
Byee!!! Off now to make some pasta for my ladies as a treat. x :-)17

Hey gang,
Not so great news today... Been to vets and the weight she put on last week has fallen off this week!
I reduced baytril dose to once daily last week as she is really fighting taking it (doing it at night when she's placid) and it looks likeit's set her back a lot..
So now have a prescription for Tylan for the water and am going to double whammy her for another wek.
But next week is D Day..... Please pray for a miracle as she really does deserve every chance.......
 
Sorry to hear its not going so well. Got my fingers crossed for you next week........hope she pulls through as shes fought very hard.

Ruff... thats about all I can say..Still waiting on the bloomin Tylan to arrive! Back to Bayrtil twice daily.
She's eating, drinking and still shouting at me if I don't get her treats out quickly enough.. but she is one poorly girl...
I just wish she would give up the fight as I can't bring myself to take her to the vet as I know what he's gonna say But the other girls aren't bullying her or anything so maybe they know there's life in her yet?
You have pre- empted my post Was gonna ask tomoro for advice on what to do... do you think she's suffering etc etc as I have never had to make such a horrible decision before....
 
Hi Aileen, its still promising that she wants to eat etc as when they are really bad they won't be tempted at all. I think Tylan is the better drug to treat Myco. Lets hope she makes some improvement soon, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for .
 
Aileen - I've PM'd you - at the stage you are at Baytril covers a much larger spectrum of infection -

I have a sabelpoot that 2 days ago was limping, have brought her into the shed, but she seems to have gone off her legs today. Have given her some Tylan, and see how she is in the morning. Don;t want to despatch her as she is so friendly and tame.

Is it just me or is poultry a very "susceptible" pastime. They seem really fragile as there's always some poor person battling to save a hen, or is it just that we all care enough to want whats best for our lot hence being members of this forum.

I hope your little poot gets better, sabelpoots like sebrights are very prone to Mareks - do keep this in mind..
 
Day 5 Tylan
Day 3 Wonder Pills.....
No difference :( She's been indoors since the weekend thinking that it would do her good but I have put her back out today with her friends as it's not made a bit of difference my keeping her indoors. What I have noticed is she mis-pecks all the time so have spent literally hours holding water and food in front of her to eat as I think she is starving slowly to death..... Weighed her today and she has put on a whole 20 grams...
Chicken vet if you read this please help me... my vet has (sort of) admitted he may have mis-diagnosed myco as an eye infection back in July 2010 as my vet is very city centre so don't get many chooks! Is it time to call it time? Is she miserable as I have noticed her wings are starting to droop and I put it down to her being stuck indoors, is she just beginning to lose the will......?
 
I've just been reading up on Myco - bacause of your problem - I had no idea that once you have it in your flock it will always be there just waiting for the next "stressfull" happening in their lives - a fox attack can set it off.. or transport, showing etc.. it also affects the eyes - there is a very good specialist poultry vet near Ayr, I was told about him by my vet who sometimes works with the Dick vet in edinburgh, I'll try and find out his name for you

Dottie died yesterday.
Shoulda/coulda told you lovely people yesterday but I am just totally gutted.... Remember what I said about the kleenex? Well I think I am onto my 3rd loo roll, tears and snots tastic.

So very sorry about your Dottie...... she was a very brave girl and you clearly did absolutely everthing above and beyond to help her through.

Oh Aileen, that is such sad news :( :( you did everything you could she was obviously a very well loved and special little chook
 
Sorry to hear your loss, it's not easy to lose one after you tried so hard to get her back to health. :-(
