Hi, was at a poultry sale recently looking for some ducks and came across a pair of Northern Pintails which I liked the look of, unfortunately I could not afford them. I have been looking for some info on them but can't seem to find anything about them being kept in captivity only info about them in the wild, can anyone help. Thanks

Hi Senna
I keep Northern Pintail, if you need any help or advice just ask.

They are fairly large Ornamental Ducks, easy to keep, placid birds and are hardy although they do like cover in the winter.

Regards Sue

Hi Sue, Thanks for the info, the pair of Pintails that were for sale were sold for £62 and were about the size of call ducks, so I assume they must have been youngsters. I really like them is this about what you would expect to pay for Pintails. Regards Senna

Northern Pintails are normally around £40 - £45 for the pair, the same as Carolinas and Mandarins.
They should also be pinioned.
Regards Sue

Hi Sue, Hope I'm not asking the obvious but what do you mean by pinioned. Regards Senna

Hi Senna
Ornamental Waterfowl have one of their wings cut at the middle joint at around 5 - 7 days of age, this stops them flying off into the sunset when out on a pond. Which auction did you see them at? wish I had put some of mine in at that price

Hi Sue, You learn something new every day :o . It was at Lanark market in Scotland. There is another sale on the 2nd Dec, I will let you know if there are any more and what price they go for. Regards Senna

They made a good price ! Is a little too far from me, one tip - keep your purse at home if they are making that kind of money. Buying at an auction is always risky, you never know if they are a pair, are they pinioned etc. You hear of all sorts of stories. A friend bought a pair of ducks from Salisbury, put them on his pond and off they flew!! I have heard of others buying laysans sold as a pair, bought them and vent sexed them they were two males
