Dirty bottoms!

Hello

My pekin hen and the ninja hen both have dirty bottoms. The pekin because she's closer to the ground and the ninja hen because she's been really unwell. (almost lost her but got some antibiotics and tonic and she's back pecking around again) I was planning on trimming their feathers a bit and washing them to clean their hint ends up.

Is there a special kind of technique involved or just wash n trim? Advice anyone?

Cheers

Osric

Are they wormed Ozric? Messy bums can be a sign of worms.

Yes, I would just wash and trim. It's a lovely job!

They're getting Diatom in their food, along with garlic and ACV in the water.

Is there anything else you'd recommend?
It was pay day today!

Hi,

Our girls are due for their second month of verm-x wormer which I put in their water.
We have water bowls and trays of food in various places for the girls whilst trying to settle in our new sablepoot - so I am finding it difficult to monitor who is having what.

Given that we will be collecting another hew hen on Sat:-
should I give them ALL Flubenvet in ALL the food sources OR put Verm-x in ALL water? (The week before last the original three hens had a week of ACV. )

How much Diatom do you put in the food?

Many thanks Sharron

Hello

It says on the side of my tub of Diatom - For worming, mix in 5% with food and for treating red mite mix in 50g per square metre of bedding

I'll get some flubenvet asap!

Hi Ozric,

It does not matter which one - the dosage is different for each because the strength is different.

For the number of chooks you have I would go for the Flubenvet 1% 60g tub (this link also supports the site by the way ;) ). This treats up to 20 Large Fowl. The 240g pack can treat thousands of birds and with the new rules can only be bought from a few places. You would also need accurate scales for the 240g pack (there is a handy scoop with the 60g tub).

There is infomation on Flubenvet 60g pack on the site here.

Hi Sharron,

Janssen (the makers of flubenvet) recommend "Worm all new poultry when introducing to the flock, before introducing the flock to pasture and the whole flock spring, summer and autumn as a preventive"

It depends on your own situation but I worm every 6 months as preventative and all new birds. I give products like ACV, diatom, etc in between times - but I do not rely on these as 'wormers' , personally I believe they make life unpleasant for worms and over time reduce worm numbers but are not going to fix a worm problem, just reduce the background level / number of worms.

I am still very undecided about Verm-X, I have seen good results in worm counts but at the same time I have seen people 'worming' with Verm-X and go to the vet with a problem that has turned out to be worms and a dose of flubenvet has corrected the problem.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys,

Flubenvet it is, from tomorrow for seven days, in all food for every girlie.

We have even bought a new bag of layers pellets, as Mike enthusiatically mixed our 2 x 25kilo bags of pellets and corn together on day 1 of the hens arriving over seven weeks ago. You can imagine the size of the bin and we have only had 3 pekins. Needless to say one girlie, the top girl, fishes out every morsel of corn!

So i'll mix 2kg of layers pellets from the new bag ,which i reckon would be more than enough for 5 bantams, with some olive oil, and then add the 1x5ml scoop of Flubenvet. Not really sure how much oil to add to the 2kg, but I guess as long it has a slightly sticky quality to it, it will be fine?

If anyone would like to just give me some reassurance, I would be grateful.

Thanks Sharron

No, you need to do it the other way around - take a small cup sized container, add some olive oil (perhaps 1/4 of a cup), then mix in the flubenvet well (it's now a paste like plaster) then add it slowly to the weighed food, stiring the feed as you add it. This way it sticks to the pellets.

Mix the pellets well and feed for 7 days. Once finished, throw away what is left so you don't get it mixed up with fresh food.

Oh and one last thing - write down the date you wormed them in your note book and when they should next be wormed in your diary ;)

Thankyou Tim,

Have got it all prepared:- 10 mins

1. Using a baking measuring spoon measured 100ml of olive oil,
2. Added 1x 5ml scoop of flubenvet to the oil and mixed well- like a pouring cream consistency
3. drizzled the mixture into a 2kg (weighed out) tub of layers pellets
4. donned my gloves, and mixed it all up, until every grain is glistening

(Not quite a cake recipe?) Lets hope the girls scoff the lot.....

Thankyou, Sharron

HI Tim
