Dirty Bottoms!!

Hi,

My Blue belle regularly gets a dirty bottom (over the past few months), which I have to keep washing to avoid the area getting sore or attracting flies. I have had to cut some the feathers from around the area as the poo constantly collects on them and would build up. My orpington has started the same this past week, so I now have two of them to wash!

I worm my hens with verm-x regulaly and their poo looks pretty normal i.e. not loose or anything.

Can anyone shed any light as to whats wrong as I would prefer not to have to do this!!!!

Thanks,

Elaine.

Hi Elaine, have you checked them for lice? A common sign that the birds have lice is a dirty bottom, also , what are you feeding them?
regards, David :)

Hi David,

Thanks for replying.

I feed them Argo layers pellets ad lib, a handful of mixed grain between the 4 of them late afternoon as a treat and a variety of fruit and veg 2-3 times a week.

I haven't checked them for lice as I was relying on Diatom powder to do it's thing, I use it liberally in their dust area and nest box. I will check them over now that you have mentioned it though.

Elaine.
