i went out to do the girls this morning at about 5.40 am when i got back from the stables and as i approached the run i could see eyes shining close to the run via my head touch and at first i thought it was the stray pure white cat thats been hanging around but it wasnt it was a fox large one at that walking around and between my runs my blood went cold and the nerves flared up now i have kept my girls for 7 yrs and this is the first time i have ever seen a fox close to the run i know during the night or even during the day when i am not around theres probably quite a few of them walking past but to actully see one makes me worry , i have no choice but to let my girls out first thing as i am at work for 6.30 am and it does worry me when its dark but now i think i might be worrying just that bit more .
the run is fox proof well it has been for all these years but it doesnt mean to say that at some point one could or can get in so this weekend i am going to re double check everything and i think double up on the wire etc especailly on the 2 new runs , am going to add more screws to the roof panels around the edging and add more slabs around the base of the run am i now paranoid yes .

Its now foxes have their kits, so they are looking for an easy meal. Its a pity you have to let them out so early but if you can get hold of a council flashing orange light, foxes hate lights and the light will go off when its light. I used to put the lights along the fence during lambing. Another thing is make sure that there is no overhanging tree or anything the fox can climb up. One more thing that works is a radio somewhere close but in the dry, fairly loud volume, try radio 4 the fox needs voices not music. One more thing is around the pen, neat Jayes fluid, sprinkle a bit here and there, sticks awful but may work.

i'll look at getting some lights although i am not to sure about it as we have lights in the garden and they always come on even with a fox in the garden and it doesnt bother them at all .
as my girls are kept on allotments i have sheds surrounding the run one side that the fox came easily get onto and jump onto the netting roof of one of the runs even though the fence is 7 ft tall with 3 lines of wire going up another 30 inches or so thats wind though steel angle beams thats goes right around the entire run but so far thats never happened thankfully and my other run is only 5ft tall one side as i needed a sloping roof but thats the one with the solid roof they should not be able to get in there , i knew i had to see one at some point just not quite so early in the morning :( .

It is a shock when you see one. If you do as you suggest and check the safety of your pens, you should be OK. The early hours is a bad time for foxes, especially if they've had a lean night's hunting. Unfortunately, they quickly get used to lights, noise and smells and take no notice.

Is it legal to put down poison, Karminski?

(Loads of people will hate me now!)

I don't do it but then we haven't had any major fox scares. :-)09

Think the weakest point of any fence is where it meets the ground Karminski. Are you sure a fox can't dig under it?

so far so good and no fox has got in , most of the slabs are on top of wire and are about 2 ft wide so it will take some digging to get under them as i have used pavement slabs which are pretty large ohh and very very heavy and as for using poison thats a no go zone for me i dont agree with poisoning any animal or killing any for that matter think it was more of the shock of seeing one .

Just to confirm that yes it is illegal to poison foxes in the UK. If there is a problem with the fox population then your local council can either advise on how to deter the fox to minimise damage/disturbances caused by them or in some cases refer to an organisation who may humanely cull to reduce the population.

think the foxes are after me or my girls   had one in the garden today at lunchtime never had that before well non e that i know of got to keep an extra eye out now but i dont know if he carried on though the gardens or went out onto the allotments thankfully my dogs didnt sense it or all hell would of broke loose tried taking pics but i could not get close enough .

i know the foxes have been out in the gardens during the night but to see them in the daytime like i did was unsual , my runs are secure and at least for this week i can get mum to check on them as shes of all week but thankfully there is normally always someone around on the site so if anything did happen i would get contacted pretty much right away , this was skinny as well .i have to be carefull next weekend as i need to take down some of the netting roof as the council are willing to turn a blind eye to the tree coming down as they reckon they cant afford it and a freind on the plot next to me as offered to do it .

I don't know how many coops you have, but we have just bought an electric pop-hole opener and we think it's great.

It was so easy to install and has a timer for opening and closing which you alter as and when you wish. We now feel happier about going off for the day and leaving them.

i got 5 coops 2 are homemade but they will be going next month as i plan to buy 2 new ones , part of me doesnt trust those eletric openers i dont know why :-)05 . not had any more visits though thankfully .
