Hi everyone

One of the ex batts recently laid an egg which looked rather like a patchwork quilt.
The whole of the shell was made up of what looked like small squares all fused together and the shell was really thick. The next day i got another one but the second was only half deformed.

Is this just a non layer which is coming into lay or something a bit more serious?

Cheers

Was it that 'cockerel ' laying them?  Ros -hens lay all sorts of funny shelled eggs - I am sure its of no concern.

Hi Ros

No, not the cockerel, he's still trying to decide what he is.

I'm getting all sorts of eggs, some with small red blotches on them, Some which feel very rough and have raised dimples on them.

Suppose its just the age of the hens and the change of lifestyle?

Cheers

Hello, they will settle down- as long as they have access to grit, i wouldn't worry- you sometimes get alsorts of mishapen, rough and soft eggs until they get into a regular pattern.
regards, David :)
