This morning whenI got up, I let the hens (3) out into their runs from the coop. About half an hour later I went out to clean out the coop and my black one was sitting on the nest laying so I left them. I came home about 4/5 hrs later and went out to see what eggs there were. My little black hen had laid her last egg - she was dead in a corner. There was quite a lot of blood around and some 'insides' - poor thing.
She didn't lay yesterday but that was not that unusual.

Have I done something wrong?
Was it a prolapse?

Any answers gratefully received

Probably a prolapse and unlikely to be anything you've done. Sorry you lost her

Sorry for ur loss :( one of mine passed 2 weeks ago and I was heartbroken. Just thank her for the eggs and bury her x

Agree with Chuck. A prolapse which broke an artery. Sorry to hear that and hope the others are fine as ours pine if one goes missing. It takes months sometimes before they return to normal -depends where the hen was in the pecking order.

Thanks for your replies. The others have only been with her a few months but she was the top of the pecking order so we will have to wait and see. Poor girl!

Sorry, you must be heart broken, I would be, so sad it's unbelievable

I'm very sorry, what a shock for you. But at least she did go quickly, I think it's worse when they hang on obviously suffering, and you don't know if they're going to make it, and then you have to decide when enough is enough for her.
