Hi,

1 of our girls died suddenly last night.

She is a 20 month old Goldline Hybrid who has pretty much layed an egg a day since she started. She will be missed.

Can anybody offer any suggestions as to cause and therefore possible risk to our other 2 girls (and our brougt forward new arrivals that we will now get!) please?

Symptons:

Fine on Saturday - out in the garden all day, running around as usual.
Sunday - another day out, morning as usual, but towards early afternoon very lethargic, but could still be tempted with tasty veg etc though. By mid/late afternoon "asleep" by back door and not interested in much. She did look miserable. Got herself into the house OK though.
Monday - morning - wouldn't leave the hen house. Picked her up - left leg not working and she wouldn't stand on it and left wing didn't look right when she moved it for balance. Eyes clear and bright and comb / wattles still red and poo (assuming it was hers) was pretty normal.
Spent all day curled up in a corner. Monday late afternoon - picked her up and brought her in to the house for the night. Didn't mind being picked up - didn't seem to care and went straight back to sleep.
This morning she was dead.

We will obviously not get the new chooks for a few weeks and will keep a close eye on our 2 girls that are left. Full clean out of house to be done, with good spray of Poultry Shield and new bedding.

If anyone can offer any suggestions or ideas as to cause, then they will be gratefully recieved.

Awww thoughts with you, Sorry I cant suggest any causes as im new to all this, But just wanted to share my sympathies. I just named one of mine daisy today too :-(

Aw, sorry to hear that... I might be way off mark here but look up Mareks in the diseases list... Not sure how resilient hybrids are to it.

I know what u mean Aileen, but when my little girl had it she didn,t die just like that. Infact we had to take her to the vet and have her put to sleep. With Mareks a typical symptom is when they try to balance with one leg forward, one back. Their wing can droop also. I think it can be quite a long drawn out death.
At least she didn,t suffer too much........it was a quick death,

--------Just a thought-----if you are getting more, having had a horrid time - I think in your position I might consider vaccinated birds if getting more? I don't normally think its always advisable but it jist might be for you , if only to relieve worry? Ros
