i have just been on the aol news site and theres a link to a new video of footage of what happens to the male chicks :( :( :( i cant even bring myself to watch it . why does this have to happen in this day and age to me i find it way to cruel and dont know if i can put up a link .i have a good enough imagination to not need to watch it and i am soooooooooooooooooooooooooo proud that i no longer buy shop eggs :-)07 :-)07

Male chicks are just gassed, unfortunately it's a sad fact of life. Hybrids are mostly autosexing, so most of those boys at day old go the same way :(
All our boys are reared on grass to a good age, then humanely killed for the table.

these go on a conveyor belt then minced alive :( :( :( i wish i had not seen the page

Hi karlooben

I have watched that video myself, it was filmed undercover at HYLINE Hatchery in the states.

Every year they produce 200m (I think thats correct) cockerel chicks which are fed into a wormdrive conveyor and dumped straight into a grinder whilst still alive.

The State which licenses HYLINE stated that there is no better or humane way to dispose of the unwanted males and see's no reason to question their right to continue to do this.

It seems a terribly harsh and short life.

link is here but only watch if you have a strong stomach

i dont need to watch it , the one on aol was from the u.k according to the news report althoughh it doesnt surprise me that it happens here anyway i just wish it didnt .

Could this post have a warning attached to it BEFORE it is read....I will now spend days thinking about this  I appreciate that this sort of horrific stuff needs to be aired to the public in order to bring about change but I have nightmares about any sort of animal cruelty so always stay away whenever poss!

I actually meant to click on the post below it but my stupid mouse keeps sticking - sorry to have a moan

i do as well maybe oneday we can pray this sort of thing will change but i doubt it ,theres always going to be to much of a demand for laying birds unless evry other person keeps birds in thier gardens an give eggs to neighbours then there wont be a need for this sort of thing quite so much but that wont happen ethier .

I agree, it is awful that so many do not understand what has to happen the eggs to get to the shop shelves.

However alot of people don't realise that while having a few hybrids in a garden does mean they get fresh eggs and know where they came from, but for every POL pullet they see when they go to pick out their new garden birds also has a little brother somewhere that never made it.

It's great to be able to get sexed chicks and hybrid pullets but 99% of the time this is only achieved by culling the males at day 1 anyway, free range, battery or garden pets.

I guess the most humane way, (however not cost efficient) would be to raise all the chicks and at least give the boys a run until big enough for the oven!

Well said Timmo! :-)07 All our boys are raised to at least 8months old on grass then humanely killed a few feet from their runs for the pot. Some are sold to breeders looking for good stock, so another reason why I like to run them on a bit.

i agree well put timmo :) and i could not agree more with you VP :-)10 but i do wish there was a better way of them doing the deed gassing ok that mite be quick but going though a mincer :-)05 no no no noooooooooo

Just shows males are only good for 1 thing

Human males maybe :-)08 ,but not cute little chicks :o . Thanks for posting the link, but I couldn't bring myself to watch it.....says she who as many cockerels running around as hens :-)07 .

I couldn't watch the video either. I knew they were killed but am shocked to know how. :( We are trying to hang on to our last cockerel; at the moment Eddie is being good and not crowing too much. It really adds an extra something to your flock to have a cockerel as their characters are so different from the hens.
