OK, may be a little bit of a stupid question, but how many worms should a bantam consume in one day?
Just spent the afternoon digging up a crumbly concrete path that was layed in the 1940s. The girls where outraged at being left out of the fun, so I let them join in. We spent the afternoon squabbling over who could pull up the next chunk first, (in my case) save the worms, (and in their case) consume as many as they could stuff into their mouths at once. :-)03 In the end, to save them being squashed under the ever increasing pile of concrete, I banished them to the other end of the garden. They preened, then seemed to go into snooze / trance state for a good hour.
Not seen them this relaxed or sleepy when out of the coop before, so a little worried. No signs of odd behaviour (apart from the snoozing) and they went to bed happily without any problems negotiating the ramp/ladder.
I'm presuming I'm being over protective mum, but know they did consume some red ants too, so would like to check for general opinion on worm consumption.

No problem with ants or worms. Ant eggs are great delicacy too.

Actually too many worms too quickly can make a chicken very poorly. Earthworms have a very simple digestive system. basically in one end (soil, leaves, debris..) and out the other, they use an enzyme to break down the solid material. Too much of this enzyme can be toxic for poultry, will dig out the link, I think they quoted a limit of around 30 earthworms?

Worms are good wholesome, natural fare, but there's an element of risk in consuming any foodstuff whether youre a chicken or a Human, but like foxy says to much of anything can be harmful! Earthworms can also carry the eggs of parasitic ascarid worms and gape worms, but don't panic! all should be well if you treat your birds for infestations periodically!. . . .

Most of ours don't like worms for some reason and leave those that come up into the run untouched. I don't encourage them to eat worm as they harbour some nasties. They few that they eat seem to pass through the digestive system only part-digested and the worm skins can be seen in their poos in the mornings.

Well I have a confession..I completely made up my post as a errr...rather lame April Fools!  thought I better 'fess up in case any of you lot take me seriously! :D ( as if... )

I was going to ask for ideas on how we could invent an earthworm counter !! But your post was so convincing, I decided light hearted was not appropriate at this time !!!!

I also put a spoof in Incubation Hatching Eggs 'Incubating Naturally' which I hope people will read in case they try tying pheasant poults to their mother with string !

Yes I spotted your spoof...nearly spat out my coffee!...Then I thought..wow..what a good idea!!! :D :D

Well, whether a spoof or not :D the girls have been laying the strangest 'fizzy' poo' since yesterday morning. Looks like black ink and the flies LOVE it. the other poos are totally normal though. I kept them on grass yesterday with access only to mash. They seems as right as rain, although Mildred got stuck between the dustbath and the greenhouse which gave me a fright.
