Hi All
I was wondering if you could settle my curiosity please?
My crested cream legbar pullets are just getting into the swing of laying nice blue eggs. On my travels around the internet, I saw it mentioned that Legbar eggs are low in cholesterol! Does anyone know if there is any truth in this please?

i never heard this be4 but i did a search and found a site which says it ( no idea if its true or not tho )

If Cream Legbars do lay eggs with a lower cholesterol content, presumabley they get this from either the aracuna or the leghorn(the cream inherits it's crest from the aracuna)so surely one of these breeds has a lower cholesterol egg as well?

Personally I don't think there's any truth in that.

If there is, I don't believe the difference is significant. Duck Vs. Chicken eggs for example give different Cholestorol levels but the differences are not great.

In fact, having looked into Cholestorol over the years, (a fatty substance known as a lipid):

(On the NHS Website) Lipid is mostly made by the liver from fatty foods that we eat - It is vital for the normal functioning of the body

Having an excessively high level of lipids in your blood can have a serious effect on your health, as it increases your risk of having a heart attack or stroke

And.. from the food standards agency:

The cholesterol we get from our food has much less effect on the level of cholesterol in our blood than the amount of saturated fat we eat. Eating a balanced diet, you don't need to cut down on eggs, prawns, avocado or liver unless your GP has specifically advised you to do this.

Just my view.. I love my 3 egg omlette for breakfast but do try to eat the right foods in general.

um,to make an omelette you need 3 eggs per person,or at least,a decent omelette anyway :D .

Thanks all. I thought if there was anything in it, more would have been known. Just when I saw it, I thought it might have been a good selling point, but obviously don't want to claim anything that isn't true.

Going back to this - In general, do blue shelled eggs sell for any more than other eggs or is it just a novelty?

Supermarkets certainly charge more for 'coloured' eggs,so I guess it's personal choice.Personally,I wouldn't,it doesn't cost any more to feed a legbar than other egg laying breeds or hybrids.Sometimes dog breeder's charge more for a bitch puppy than a dog puppy, that was also something i've never done.It never cost me more to raise a bitch puppy than a dog puppy,so why charge more?
