Hello, here is one of my coronation Sussex POL pullets- not a very common colour- not rare but not too many around- They are a standard breed of sussex- invented in 1936 for the coronation of King George- hence the red(face and wattles) White( body) and Blue-( hackles, tail and some wing flights) This bird is going to be good i think  She is well marked and a good size.

Very nice! Shes going to be a good one :D Sussex are lovely birds. Havent got any coronation though.

Nicely marked, lucky you! I thought they were quite rare? Are you going to breed from her she looks stunning :)

Hi, they aren't common but there are a few around (mostly bantams) most are not that well marked and rather small in size and not a good breed standard-i have a small flock, along with light sussex of course! As you get both it being a black/blue mating- the line goes back to my granny- but i am now down to 4 coronation hens, three cockerels and 7 light sussex hens. I have two pens- one all coronation and one with the l/sussex hens and a coronation cockerel.
The pullets are not laying yet but shouldn't be long as they are nice and red- i will try a late hatch this year as you have to hatch so many to get enough coronations :(
regards, David :)

She looks rather pretty! (white and fluffy David), not being an expert in this breeding-line business.

Your granny gets mentioned a few times- she clearly passed on a lot of wise and valuable info to you. Grannies know best, pity we don't listen a bit more to what they have to say before its too late.

Do you know, every time I see something like this, I'm so tempted to start with another breed!

I've never see the Coronation Sussex, now please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought they existed up until the second World War and after that, only existed in Bantam size? - It's hard for me to tell from the photos but she looks pretty big is she definately not a bantam???

OK I know the title of the post says Large Fowl Pullet but I really thought LF Coronation Sussex were lost and hadn't yet been recreated... the bantams were recreated in the 1980's but not the L.F.

Hi Tim, no, she is not a bantam  they have always been around- not many in the UK but very popular in Austrailia and USA- my line (or my grannys) goes back at least 50 years- same as my silkies- they are my grannys line ( with a little Tinsen and Hidden thrown in)
Most coronation sussex l/f are small in the uk- it's hard to find big birds- but my light sussex are very big so over the years the coronation have increased in size- the picture is an 19 week old pullet so she has lots of growing to do yet.
Like i said in my last post i haven't many left now- need to hatch later on in the year- and you dont get many blues- even though i mate blue to blue and black to blue- I could do with a new blood line- i have introduced new light sussex blood so it's not too critical yet. I may have some next season if you think about getting some :)
regards, David :)

Wow. I didn't think L.F. existed after the War...

I will have to ammend the Sussex breed page now and scrounge some photos from you soon ;)

I will re-read my book too :?

She is absolutely lovely David. You weren't joking about liking blue chickens were you!
