The enlarging of the chicken run is in the planning stage right now due to the Bantam brood of mum and 6 chicks that followed the wife home. They are currently living in the quarantine coop and run but they will get better accommodation.

Run extension is planned and they will be kept in a separate run that can be opened up if required. But the Coop????

How much perch space required per bird? how high for the perches? Size of the nest boxes as they will have to be incorporated into the coop?

And the chicks are just coming up to 4 weeks old now. All looking fine- Mum still attentive and all looks fine.

And one final question- How noisy are Bantam Cocks? Some one told me they are subdued in their crowing but I will wait to see if they have to go.

Hi Stapfam. Perch space depends on the breed. Bantams 6", large fowl 12". Height from floor a maximum of 18"- hens do perch higher given the chance but watch them get down, it's a real thump on the floor and risk of bumblefoot. Flighty breeds have so much wing to weight ratio they would be fine at any height -our TNN's can jump 2' and fly far higher than that.

I can hear our Bantam Leghorn Boris when he is shut in the greenhouse or the coop from 100 yards. Being a much higher pitched crow it has the potential to be rather more irritating than the large fowl.

I agree with Chris, often it is the large fowl who have the lower pitched crow, so not so disturbing. We have a pekin cockerel that has a shrill crow that you could hear for miles!
