Hi,

I have noticed that Colin the cockerel lets the layers feed first and he will find food and let the girls eat before him, is this the norm or is he just a real gent.

I also noticed as different hens moulted late last year they became outcasts and those not moulting bullied them until they were fully feathered and they were allowed to join the group again.

The girls are really enjoying this warmer spell, come to think of it so am I, long may it last.

regards Heather

Yes - A good cockerel will call his girls to the food, or to any interesting tidbit he has found, and will even pick food up and offer it to them. And he will scratch for them as a broody hen will scratch for her chicks.

My old stock cockerel will always talk to me as I go past and normally gives me an offering even if it is only a bit of straw - I know its daft but don't you just love them :)

All the best
Sue

Hi,

absolutely, I love my birds, they are such characters,I can spend ages just watching them. I often go out with a cup of coffee lean on the gate and watch them and their antics.

Each girl has her own personality and habits, they can be so funny sometimes, first thing on a morning when they are let out they run flapping their wings to the top of their enclosure and then they cruise around the run in a pack untill the whole area has been checked over.
It is like watching a cartoon as they run bouncing from leg to leg flapping like mad as if they are going to take off,the speckled sussex look like they have hitched up their petticoats when they run.

Non chicken keepers don`t know what they are missing, ( lice, mites, worms etc.) and I get just as much pleasure from my quail,I adore the little noises they make and the lovely rolling call of the male.

But then I am a bit of a chicken freak.

Regards Heather

Well we're all freaks together then on this forum!!
But yes, I can lose hours just watching my girls, I actually missed them when the weather was really bad up here! I wrapped up a few times to spend some QT with them but it was too cold...
Have a nice day from another chicken freak x

One of my 'lads' here is a gent too - he lures the ladies over with a tit-bit and then as they start to eat it, he does a little dance, grabs them by the back of the neck and jumps on! :o

Such a gent
