my little pekin cockeral is 7 weeks now so today seeing that mum seems to be losing interest i thought i would let them all in together to see what happens so i left the sepration door open and in time all the pekins went into the other section followed by lanky doodle the large cuckoo maran cross { who will not go in with the big girls at all } well it was so funny the little pekin cockeral who cant even reach her chest ran up to her and wham attacked her with full force he leaped and took one peck at her i laughed so much as the size difference made it more funny then as he turned his back on her she pecked him hard on the bum and freaked him right out   talk about biting of more then you can chew think those 2 might have more battles in the future well thats if i can get away with keeping him .

It's amazing isn't it how something so small can be so full of itself. My pekin is now 12 weeks and it's so funny to watch him strutting around the run like he owns the place, he's getting quite loud with his crowing now, but fingers crossed everyone seems to be ok with it. He is such a little gent, if I drop a treat for him and his girls he calls them and then waits till they tuck in before eating himself, unlike the welsummer who used to just run off with it. The last time you posted photos they were still chicks Karminski, you will have to put up some photos of how they look now, and heres hoping you will be able to keep him.

i'll do some later as i am not 100% if hes a creole pekin ?? as i only had him and his sister hatch out of mixed pekin eggs its difercult to tell hes very handsome though and i really want all these birds together but i am a bit reluctant to just leave the pen doors open and let them get on with it as his sister isnt to bright bless her and i feel she may end up getting hurt i dont think i need to worry about the little boy though with lanky as he did stick up for himself yesterday, am wondering if its better to just leave the doors open during the day when i go to work and just let them get on with it at least i cant stand by watching them and worrying myself that i need to get in there quick

What are you feeding them, Karminski?
Until they're 18 weeks old at least, they would do better on growers pellets, which are formulated to help them to develop steadily until they reach adulthood. Presumably if they are mixed in with the adults they will be getting layers pellets? These have too much calcium for growing birds and this is one reason for keeping youngsters separate in the first 5 months. Yes it's a pain having to look after more pens, but it's what is best for them if you're going to breed and raise chicks.

they are going onto growers during the week as i need to get to the feed store that sells it as my local one doesnt but my white leghorns managed ok on the layers pellets didnt do them any harm , everytime i thought they were caged in well enough even at 5 weeks old when i got them they still flew to the top of the netting and got out via a few inch gap and were eating them .this is them now :)its the best pic at the mo of the female as she just would just not stay still  at all.

The two Pekin crosses we had from the drive by dumping were particularly agressive as well Karminski, towards the large two Dinky and Donky. They also had chronic scaly leg mite which I understand feathery footed birds are prone to.

do you think they were mistreated then but then again some animals are just agressive an they dont need a reason for it . touch wood my feathered girls have been ok i check thier legs weekly maybe i should not speak to soon

Leg mite can creep up on you -following a recent operation I've had to just do basic care for my girls for a few weeks, and yesterday, when I got back to giving them a good going over, I noticed some of the scales round their ankles were beginning to be raised. No excuse, they don't have feathered legs. So I shall have to keep on treating them regularly for a few weeks. At least I didnt find any lice, or mite in the coop when I gave it a good clean out. I had feared I'd get a bad outbreak when I wasnt able to deal with it.

thats why i check mine each week and treat at least twice a month as i did have a outbreak last year or the year before i think , the bantams hate it but it has to be done am dreading doing the chicks though they wiggle more

Hes a silver partridge pekin cockerel :D They can be little devils, I have one that likes to give my boot a small peck and hes only 5 weeks old!

thankyou i know someone who might be interested in him :D even though i am not allowed to keep the boys so far everyone is telling me to keep him until someone complains but i dont like taking the risk or upsetting the council .
