Did everyone see this on the news last night? I didn't see it myself but apparently a fox tried to attack a flock & soon wished he hadn't  Don't know what part of the country it was but the cockerel saw the fox off to the heavenly stars above!! Standing up for his girls, the boy dun good, certainly earned his keep :D

I saw this, it made me chuckle...that fox certainly got more than he bargained for.

Here's the story:

Sorry to hijack the thread but it's just for a minute... :?

Just seen this as a link from the killer cockeral story:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/wildlife/7011035/Giant-cattle-to-be-bred-back-from-extinction.html

Now that would be a sight to see! It would be a bit of a Frankensteins Moo-nster (sorry, couldn't resist it) but seeing a cow over six feet tall with an attitude the same as my hooligan bantam would be amazing.

Imagine the size of the steaks you could get from it!!! :o

Back to the ferocious chicken thing, I watched mine running and they run the same way the T-Rex does from Jurassic Park. So a T-Rex is just a giant chicken with a crocodiles head. Imagine the amount of pellets you'd go through with a chicken that size!

I was really pleased that the Essex chooks, killed a fox.It may have been a young fox but it wont break into another hen house again.
The one thing that did surprise me though, where I live we do have foxes. They have never ventured into my garden, which I assumed was because of my dogs. The lady that owns the 'fox killing' chooks also has dogs, but that fox still went in.I'm now re-thinking that a fox will come into my garden putting my hens at risk.

What you need is a Chicken/T Rex/Aurochs cross, that'll sort out any fox problems!

Just poke it with a stick, a big stick! :)

Osric, you've got creme eggs, cadbury's creme eggs wow,I love those. The most i've eaten in one go is 18,used to buy the boxes in tesco's,first there were boxes of 12,then 18,heaven........... :D .

My bs may have been a bit high(well, through the roof)but it's worth it.

Oh,and as to poking it with a big stick, sorry, big stick, you poke it first  ,then I'll give it a poke ;) .

I'm sorry, I just can't believe it. :? I've seen how a fox behaves, trapped in a hen house and you wouldn't want to put your arm in there... I just can't believe he would be killed by a chicken, even if the perch fell onto him...

Viral marketing I'd say, one of those incredible stories that people love to forward that gives a website loads of publicity!

I guess he could have got his head trapped in the door and in the struggle to get it out, suffocated himself or something...

;)

Ah well, I've got 25 years experience in martial arts so if I hit something with a stick it stays hit!

Still can't catch my hooligan cockeral though!

Maybe it's a new strain of super chicken - the next step in chicken evolution. You know, like the X-Men but with chickens instead :D

hi
a friend gave me the bit about this out of the news paper. been a bit hyped up really. there was a table the chickens used to perch on and it fell over wen they scrambled up it to get out of the way when the table fell it hit the fox on the head knocking it out. the cockerel then took advantage and pecked the fox to death when it was out cold.

What really worried me about the article was that it said the fox got in by nosing up the pop hole. Can that happen ? I'm going to have to replace my cheap house soon and was looking at a Forsham Cottage Ark one with a pop hole that drops down. At least my current one has a pop hole that slides across and there's a secure run around it - trouble is it leaks and my neighbour just had two of the same sort blow over.

Yes, foxes will do incredible things to houses sometimes - If you imagine what a dog can do - tearing at things with teeth, pushing with nose, digging etc... add to this a certain 'cat' element of jumping and pouncing and you have a fox

If there is a gap at the bottom of the pop hole, I'm sure he could nudge it up...

The table would make more sense... they are some lucky chickens!

You are right to be concerned Dawn, when I got my first hen house,my SBT could open the nest box and pop hole when they were closed with his nose.He also did it straight away, with out practising. My other dogs learnt by copying him.All I did was fix some bolt things to the doors, which have worked brilliantly.Cheap and easy to do,I will do this with any hen houses I buy now, regardless of how well constructed they are.
I'm fortunate that all my dogs are completely chicken safe, they wouldn't even dream about chasing/killing a hen,or at least not the ones they live with ;) .

On another website I saw a picture of a tiny gap in a house where the fox got in. All it was, was a loose strip of wood which foxy pushed aside far enough & got in. They're clever little blighters. I've got a bolt on the pop-hole door & the nest box, I'd rather be safe than sorry :x

My SIL looks after some Silkies & the cockerell they had saw off a fox attack on 2 occasions, after quite a fight by the look of him afterwards. Kept Foxy away for quite a while but sadly he came back again & on the 3rd visit he lost the fight. Brave lad though did his best especially for a smaller breed.
