hi all , at what age do the cockerals start crowing? does it differ with breed types? id like to keep any for meat birds if i can keep them long enough to ge to the right weight /age .

Most cockerels start crowing at around twelve weeks of age or so, although there is a good deal of variation amongst breeds and individuals in this. Certain precocious bantam breeds, or singular, fast developing birds of any breed may begin earlier, but the more dominant birds amongst a group of young males will be the first to start, and their subordinates will probably remain quieter for much longer.

what type of meat birds are you thinking of keeping? i cant see crowing being a real problem until they reach at least 18 weeks old. before that crowing is pretty pathetic and at worst usually pretty sporadic. most meat chickens should be more than big enough by this age.
