Hi,

A silly title I know but didnt know how else to put it, and the wife thinks ive lost it...

I have a newly hatched chick 5 days old now, Ive noticed that faeces are getting stuck to the 'down' at the back end (Anus), when i get home from work i spend 10 minutes or so with warm soapy water and tissues removing the same for him/her.... I know what some of you must be thinking!!! and im not sure if ive lost it here myself..... my question is is this normal for a chick? do i bother removing it for him/her on a daily basis? or am I just down and out being ridiculous.....?

All 'constuctive' advice greatfully recieved.....!!!!!!

You do right to keep it clean. Don't know why this happens but it clears itself eventually.

Check they chicks are warm enough and their chick crumb is fresh, these factors can contribute towards a sticky bot in chicks, but yes you are perfectly right to wash it off.....whether you have lost it or not well that is another matter! :D :D :-)07

Thank Guys, Ill carry on but ill check the temperature though as i havent done that.

We had one (or two? was last year) in a hatch of 40 that had poo sticking to its bottom. Cleaned it off as it was obstructing its vent completely. Couple of days and no further problems. Temperature was fine, crumb was a new bag. We gave each of them a tiny spot of Yoghurt with probiotic at day two so maybe that helped?

Water straight out of the tap can cause it too. Use room temp water. I fill a small jug & keep it by the brooder for their water.
