Yesterday one of Chinese geese ( 7 months old) had blood on her foot and chest, could not find any cuts or where the blood (small amount) was from.
Today she has a pronounced limp and again upon inspection she has no visible marks cuts or swelling anywhere.
Upon inspection again this evening the leg in question feels cold when compared to the other leg and that of the other birds for comparison. the leg is painful to her as when you touch it move it she is very unhappy. It does not feel broken.
I had thought of keeping them indoors for a few days for rest

Anyone have any thoughts what could be wrong or advise.

kind regards
Andy

There are a few things that cause lameness in geese, its the blood that is baffleing me, as you can not see where it is coming from, i would have thought the leg would feel warmer than the other legs not colder. A sick goose will limp, if it has worms it will limp, its to young for arthrities, is it stressed, could the blood be coming from its mouth, or its rear end? just a few sugestions.

Hi ameeyal,
Thanks for the reply, they (5 geese) were wormed three weeks ago with Flubenvet, and all seemed fine. No more blood on her. Kept all birds in today and the limp is no worse but no better? she is eating well.
Its somewhat of a mystery and as you say you would expect the leg to be hot not cold?

Well i will restrict the movement for a few more days on the basis that she looks well other then the leg issue and she is eating OK, hoping it may improve, but if not improvement occurs then i guess its off to the vet. just concerned that no improvement after a week could be making things worse?

could it have got it's leg/foot stuck somewhere, and in freeing it sprained or strained it?Although I would expect some swelling.Hope it starts to recover soon.

Another thought about your goose, do you know if she is being picked on by another goose? Or she may have dislocated it, but there should be some movement to sugest a dislocation, and you said you couldnt feel any movement.Let me know how she gets on.

Hi All, again thanks for all the comments and advise,

After keeping them indoors again yesterday she is now showing significant improvement, let them into a small outdoor run this morning and by this evening she was almost limp free, FANTASTIC :D . So i am guessing it was some sort of sprain, although the blood remains a mystery.

Interestingly she is the closest female to the Gander so i will keep my eye on his potential advances. Is it normal/common for a gander to have a prefered female, mine runs with four females.

Many thanks
Andy

Fantastic,so pleased she's better.I suspect the blood was maybe nothing to do with her limp.Maybe,it was blood from something else that was on her.
Of course out of four geese he could have a favourite, that is slightly more special.Possibly she is more responsive to him or slightly more mature than the others.
I'm sure when you're out there are some women who catch your eye more than others  .
