Hi All,

I think I have red mite as my chooks have decided they want to sleep outside, under the raised coop for the last 2 nights. Just been having a search of the forum and have gotten a few good ideas, particularly DE and Nipon mix.

Does anyone have any particularly good washes etc I can use when cleaning them out?

Thanks in advance.

Ok defo have mites. I thought I was just itching as I thought we had them, turns out I had a few on my arm.... Bot shower and scrubbed down, so the more remedies the merrier!

Hi Ian.
When I found that I'd unwittingly bought a second hand coop riddled with red mite, I blitzed it with a whole pump spray of ready to use "Total Mite Kill" - it's pink stuff that looks like 1970s Windowlene. Admittedly I rather exceeded the specified dosage, and repeated the treatment a few days later for good measure, but it certainly seemed to work.

Since then, I've relied on Poultry Shield and diatom for prevention & use them every 1 - 2 weeks without fail.

Good luck...

Thanks Icemaiden,

How long do the chooks have to be out of the house after treatment?

Try adding Red Stop to their drinking water. Although harmless to the hens it apparently makes their blood taste nasty to the mite so they stop biting and then starve. You use it every day for a week or two, then add it once a week to keep up the treatment. A small bottle lasts ages as you only add a few drops per drinker.

I got my wife to go to our poultry supply shop earlier and he gave her some A R Backs parasite control concentrate and some DE powder to sprinkle them with. Given the birds a good dusting and the coop. Need to do the spray early morning so cant do til Saturday when off work.

Just checked and 1 of my girls is in the other 2 out... Good sign?

Sorry Ian; just seen your question.
I didn't actually have any hens at the time, as I'd bought the coop in advance.
I'd guess to leave the coop for a couple of days after blitzing with a bottle of "Total Mite Kill" but perhaps Chris would know better? :-)19

Has anybody had a problem with these little mites getting on to you?

I am constantly paranoid that they are on me, when I look I can see nothing, but I am itchy as well. I think it is probably just knowing that they are around causing it but..... better safe than sorry!

Yes I think its well worth giving them this, as well as the other things you're trying. I found this link, which explains it in more detail
