I'm posting this on here, because I posted on the duck section and although I got a couple of replies which I am very grateful for, I didn't really get all my questions answered. It is also probably more appropriate on here as I know there are forum members who keep chickens and ducks and that is what I am enquiring about (partly). I have tried searched the net for answers, but don't really seem to be able to find any.

I know I am completely mad, but I would like to keep a few ducks!! Not for the eggs, just for fun, so I don't care how many eggs they lay. I don't have any grass and am wondering whether that is a problem for ducks. Ideally I would love to have lots of grass for the hens and ducks, but just don't have it. I have an area about 30' x 10' and it is a 1/4 concrete and the remainder is large round gravel. I could put in some water in the form of some sort of container that could be emptied and refilled daily. It obviously wouldn't get dirty from mud as there isn't any! Is this totally impractical and not a happy place for ducks? I would only like about 3 or 4 (not sure what breed) but something that doesn't fly or could be wing clipped. Do I need to keep a drake with them or can they all be female? The other question if about the hens - can the ducks mix with the hens or would they be attacked by the hens? What about diseases - as my hens have myco/IB could the ducks catch this or don't they get these diseases?

Lots of questions I know, sorry.

Perhaps you will all be able to talk me out of it!

Well I have found ducks much more hardy than chickens and are not at risk of catching disease from chickens which is another plus!
I am not sure about which breeds, I know there are some lovely miniatures, such as black east indians, and sliver appleyards, however my experience is with runner ducks and muscovies so can't really comment.
One thing with all of them is that they need more space per duck and are very messy. Unless you have lots of space I wouldn't recommend mixing ducks with chickens and the ducks will very quickly contaminate drinking water.
