Hi all

not sure if this is the correct area for this question but here goes.

What do you all do with the chicken muck? I collect mine every morning from the hen house and would like to compost it for the garden, there is a small amount of sawdust with it but not alot.

It seems a waste not to make use of it but how long should I leave it to compost ? do I mix anything with it i.e. leaves or greenery ? is it made in an open heap or in a bin?

Any advice would be great.

Kind regards Heather

it makes great compost!

its up to you how you want to keep it to compost - be aware that rats might like the warmth & traces of food - so make sure you can check for tunnels or holes. :-)03

Chicken poo is high in nitrogen... so needs leaving for 6 months to a year to compost, depending on what else is with it & how hot it gets.
It depends as well on how you garden - in the autumn you could put in straight onto beds that are fallow til spring (I do)

I even box up "pure" chicken poo for my parents to add to their compost bin!!

We have 2 big compost heaps that we "dispose" of the chicken muck on. We alternate them yearly (so 1 year use the compost off 1 while filling the other then swap over the following year so it has the chance to rot down well). Also have 1 of those "dalek" shaped compost bins where most of the household compostable waste goes, but every few weeks the chicken waste goes in there & the household compostable stuff goes on the big heap (try to do alternate layers of chicken waste, green waste like grass clippings, veg peelings, etc, waste from our rabbits, leaves & so on & give it all a good mix up every so often). Also bag some up (along with leaves - we live in the woods so there's no shortage) for my mum's compost heap too.

I just put it on my compost heap. I have 2 large boxes and 4 dalek shaped ones. It all seems to take ages to rot down anyway, but rats can be a problem. Ours are outside our garden on the field and rats definitely go in them. Luckily our chickens are nowhere near them and we haven't had any trouble in the runs.
