I am seriously considering expanding my little animal farm, and am on for handy hints for dog breeds. I realise that its mostly about how you integrate / introduce and how some dogs just don't mix but thought I would put it out anyway for advice / input from you lot

I have a Collie/Labrador cross. She is fine around the chooks but I have stopped taking her into their area because she has a bad habit of licking or eating the rare bit of Chicken poo. :-)01 :-)19

It's wrong on soooo many levels .... :-)03

Hey Reb, I got one!!!!!
How eggcited am I!!!
He is a Lab / German Shepherd cross , 8 weeks old and smaller than my guinea pig!
Took him out to meet my ladies and all hell broke loose - panic at the disco styleeee!!!
Right going to my bed now as I think Lester may well have me up more than once this evening!!!!

That was quick ! :-)11

At 8 weeks , Lester will be a jester for sure. Puppy training.... :-)07 It'll be a while until he chills  You certainly will have your hands full 8-)

Do I assume that if he is that small his feet are disproportianaly massive ? That GS blood ?

Aaaww I would have loved to have had a puppy but we rescued a St Bernard instead, he's great with the chickens and chicks, he loves to lay down and watch them he also likes to lick the chicks :-) our dog also eats chicken poo, I agree so wrong it's gross. A friend has a dog which does the same so there must be something in it that they either like or need! Anyways good luck finding a chicken friendly puppy!

Put any dog in a field of poo and it will find one it likes to eat or roll in. My dog "Hera" is a bitch so it might be that she eats it due to doing what comes naturaly with puppies (?) But I worry about worms etc. The rolling in cow poo thing is because dogs have it in them geneticaly to "hunt". Cow poo disgueses their scent. :-)02

that won't last! I bet he ends up huge in all directions with that mix!

our GSD frightens the chooks, licks the pigs' noses and sings to the goats! As she is Sheba, and the billy goat is Cesar, I think it confuses her when I talk to them...

any chance of a picture of him?!

Hey!
My mutt is the reason I haven't visited in a while , boy o boy he is keeping me busy! And yes he also has a chew on chook poo too when out in the garden ( and when in doors he helps keep the cats litter trays clear of poo too.... ) its gross! So the kittys trays have now been changed to the big igloo esque things and Lester is doing his business in the front garden instead as it was giving him the runs all this poo eating!
I have once again failed to stick pics on but if you want to see him he is on my facebook page.
I will pm you my full name and if you're on FB you can find me and have a nosey at my pics

A x

Hey Aileen,
Good to know all is going well with your pup. All that poo clearing though (and poo eating especially) is a step too far for me. Enough poo clearing with the chickens! Would love to see your pics but I'm afraid I don't do Facebbook. I spend enough time on the computer already without that! Have fun with him. :-)99

Hi Aileen,
General advice with dog types is that thy are all bred for something different. Greyhounds chase hares sheepdogs sheep etc. Thing to do is to avoid a 'bird dog' because these can never be trusted with chicken. The worse bird dogs (from chickens POV ) are things like setters poodles and especially spaniels.

Socialise him as much as you can at an early age around the chooks I'd say, when he's older he'll then consider them part of his family.

Thats true
I have a collie and a german shepherd. The german dheperd lovews to play with cats and the collie herds the chickens. If one gets lost, he shows us where the lost chicken is!
