Hi all, first post-
I have a day old chick that hatched out day 19 with curled toes- I have made "shoes" using sticking plaster (bandaid) and its straightened them out somewhat- question is how long do I keep the shoes on and what causes this to happen?
It's been a disastrous incubation- down from 16 eggs to only two. I use a Brinsea Octagon 20- all automatic including humidity pump. Temp 37.5 throughout- RH 45% up to day 18 now 70%. The only egg remaining hasn't pipped externally but this is only day 20.

Sorry- loads of info!

Cheers

Hi Scrambled and welcome to the forum. Temp goes down to 37.0 C for the last three days at which time humidity goes up and turning stops. Presumably you've done that? You can have problems with ambient temperature -should be running in a room at 20C at least, but that usually results in a late hatch.

The curled toes is likely to be a vitamin B deficiency in the diet of the adults. The 'shoes' would come off fairly quickly, say two days, because their feet are growing and the chick crumb should correct any deficiencies in diet from the yolk sac. If the toes are still curled make new shoes.
