Howdy Y'all,

I've been doing some research on meat chickens, and I don't want Cornish Chickens because their legs break when they get heavy and they don't lay but an egg a week. I researched Chantecler Chickens and found out that they're hardy in the heat and cold, they lay well and their meat is the finest of all Indian Game chicken. I was wondering if any of y'all have had experience with them, if so, what do you think about them? -ChickenChaser ;)

Good Afternoon Chaser,

I do know about the Cornish type, about 20 years ago I bought 60 of them, what a HUGE MISTAKE that was! Alot of them did infact cripple. All they did was eat, sleep and crap. From the time I received them to the time I processed them (which I did myself and was a HORRIBLE experience) was aprox. 8 weeks, they averaged 8.75 lbs each, dressed. I swore I would never have another chicken. Like I said, that was 20 years ago.

I did read in one of my many chicken catalogs that they have a feed additive that will help prevent the crippling.

I will try the meat birds next spring and I will only get two dozen. I will also take them to a professional processor. "Once bitten, twice shy".

I'm sorry, but I can't help on the Chantecler Chickens. I will be reading the replies though, I might give those a try in the spring.

Good Luck,

Wrigley
