does anyone here use cardboard bedding or has anyone tried it ???? am thinking of giving it a go tomorw when i go to collect my horse feed i may grab a bag if it works ok i mite be able to get my works to cut me loads up from recycling :D

It may work, I have used it for chicks before (worked fine)

but i am sure somebody may correct me because i am not absolutley sure.
thanks :D .

I have not used this myself but if it is likely to get wet it might be a problem. Do you intend to use it in the run or just the coop? I use woodchip with a light layer of Aubiose on top on the run floor and just newspaper on the coop floor which I change each day.I do however only have 6 wyandotte banties to look after!! ;)

If I didn't have to buy it by post, I would use it over wood shavings.... It is very good - the biggest advantage is it is dust free and easy to pick up off the ground when it gets kicked out of the coop by the hens, compared to wood shavings.

Have a look at my Ecopetped review from Earthly Enterprises

Tim.

this is for inside the hen house only non of my run is covered so its a waste to put anything in the run .thanks for the link looks like i will be buying some this afternoon :D would adore to use it for the horses but that might work out very pricey although i am always willing to give just one bag a go with oneof my horses whos on matts .

Hi
I have tried the cardboard bedding and personally did not like it, so converted back to dust extracted shavings.

i have converted 1 house to it and the other one will be done tomorw i need to give one bag a go so i have it for at least a month will report back then must admit it smelt like sherbet

Am watching this post quite intently.... V.V. interested in what you have yo say about the paper bedding.. I have been toying with the idea for a while.. Bit of a bonus if it smells like sherbet tho... yum!

If you need lots of chopped cardboad, you can bring the price right down if you buy a pallet. It seems to be the posting of individual bails that really costs.

Assuming you have somewhere to store a pallet of it though

i might be able to get mine done at my works i have to take some in to show them first though and then they said it might only be done every few months before the blade is changed on the machine as if they used a new blade it would get blunted within hours :( so i will have to wait and see . i was quite surprised when i cleaned out one of the sheds this morning i didint take out as much bedding as i normally would of not sure about how warm it will keep the birds though when they stand in it :-)05

re edit  wander if it would work out cheaper to buy a pallet load for the horses :-)05 hay and straw an shavings is going up beyond a joke now i might ring around a few places monday .

Hi,

Karlooben- just how many animals do you have. It sounds like you certainly have your hands full. Cannot imagine how much horses need?

Hi, i used to have cardboard under a layer of wood shavings, cut the cardboard to the size of the floor, but have a flap on 1 side, so when it came to cleaning them out, i would roll the cardboard up with the shavings from the side with the flap on it, made life easy when cleaning them out

I agree. putting down a layer of newspaper, or cardboard under any bedding (if your house is suitable) makes mucking out hens/ducks so much easier.

We have customers using cardboard bedding for an unbelievably wide range of animals and it seems to work well for them all. I've used it this winter in our sheep shelter. I expected poor results, but it has done better than straw much to my surprise.

If anyone would like a quote for bulk deliveries DM me or email via earthlyenterprises.co.uk

I'm sorry the costs and carriage for single bales is so high. We have done what we can and have reduced the price this year, but it's is much cheaper by the pallet if you can use/store that amount.

i was thinknig of using cardboard boxes flat but i think i will stick with the cardboard chips so far i am liking them , elmwood i have 25 animals in total was 26 { lost 1 girl during the night , 3 horses 2 dogs , 19 girls } these bales of cardboard chips might work out cheaper for the horses if stable matts were used as well so i will get one bag next friday and give it a go as i would only need 1 bag at a time .
