Hi Guys,
Im currently building an ark for Some Pekins im collecting in a few weeks. I've made the frame 8ft x 3ft x 3ft. How many Pekins will this suit? the run will be 5 x 3 and the house will 3 x 3 with 2 perches.
Also how high off the ground should the perches be? Cheers

i think the rule of thumb is one square meter per bird but im not sure where i heard that!

That seems more like large fowl... the plan is 4 Pekins that will be free ranging when im home from work. I checked the defra website but they give guidelines on nesting and perches but not runs. :S

my broody coop and run is 8 1/2 feet long including the house and i wouldnt keep more than two birds in it. personally i wouldnt keep anything in it full time. i use it for when i have chicks and for sick hens. if you are getting bantams it will be better but i wouldnt get more than a couple or they may fight. i have netting round mine so they are outside full time and only shut in during the day. you can buy it on omlets website. may be an option if you want more birds than the size of the coop will take.

Hi
With pekins being small birds you would be fine with at least 3 pekins in a house ande run that size. Good choice in the breed, they are lovely with a nice calm temprament.

Thanks for the response, they will be let out on a daily basis after i geg home feom
Work and weekends and in the ark when im out. Ideally id had them free ranging but i live in a urban environment and there are alot of kids about. I have a 6 ft wall all the way around the garden so its secure but i dont wana come home to fox attack or ones got over the wall etx etc.

Thoughts greatly appreciated???

if you have a six foot fence all the way round they shouldnt get over it although i know a hen who does a fab job at it! being pekins i think the chances are very slim and you can also trim a wing to off balance them. if your still worried about foxes i would get the netting it works well.

Thanks Georgina, i may just have to let them out for a few hours each day until i feel confident about the foxes. To be honest the area is so busy with kids and people etc. I haven't seen a fox in the year i've been here... not even at night. Unlike london where they are everywhere. I've looked at electric fencing but its very expensive.
Thanks again

Keith

Letting them out 'under supervision' is a good way to go in the first instance. You can adapt as you go.

Remember the long winter nights ? Not much chance to let them out after work so the house & pen do need to be a suitable size. Back to your original question ! I can't be much help as I don't know how big a Pekin is !
